A little boy survives unbelievably horrific circumstances.
Let's do all we can to stop this horror that's affecting too many children today.
It shouldn't hurt to be a child.
To look at him, it's a wonder that he's even still alive.
Eight years old, painfully skinny (so much so you can count each individual rib on his scrawny body), thin, straight black hair, clouded eyes that see nothing but shadows, arms and legs resembling sticks.
He's currently in our hospital, where we are fighting a battle to ensure his survival. He was brought to our attention by a police officer who'd gone to the child's home for reports of abuse and child cruelty/neglect. It was clear that he was in danger of dying if somebody didn't intervene as quickly as possible.
What the police saw was shocking. A little boy lying on the closet floor, with nothing but dirty, soiled underpants on, with nothing but water to drink or a few scraps of bread to eat. When they saw him, he was so weak he couldn't even lift his head, let alone, move. He'd lie there on the floor, whimpering softly and shaking because he was so cold.
The boy's adoptive parents were immediately arrested, where they are now in prison, awaiting their trial.
Now the boy is here, and we are trying to save his life. He's currently in the PICU, where he's being given antibiotics, nutritional suppliments via IV's or NG tube (he can't eat by himself due to being so weakened), and oxygen to help his pneumonia-riddled lungs. He's burning with fever; he's very sick. He's in critical condition. If the boy makes it, it will be a miracle.
How anyone can do this to a little child is incomprehensible. Unfathomable. Incredible.
To see the little boy's scarred body (due to being hit by hands, belts, or whatever object was closest or burned by cigarettes) is heartwrenching. To see the appalling condition of his thinness is enough to make anyone cry. All we can do now is to try to ease his breathing difficulties, bring down his fever, and combat any unforseen infection that may be lurking inside his small body.
And pray. Pray that he makes it through this situation.
Karen this is a heart wrenching write, but this is the reality for some, this reminds me in a way of Jillian Ryans story in Somebody Loved Me, but it was her adopted parents who saved her, from the abuse she suffered in foster care, if you can get your hands on the book I would highly recomend it.
God Bless
Michelle!~
I find it interesting that rarely are stories involving abuse of biological children publicized... why is that?
Adoptive parents are not all bad... It is a shame that abuse happens in any situation!
Oh Karen what I would give to be put in a room with only a baseball bat and those parents, They deserve to know what pain is and I would love to hear them scream until they went insane wishing I'd just take their lives but I would prefer to watch them suffer for what they have done to this innocent child.
My husband and I have adopted because those children needed someone to love and care for them, someone they would trust to always be there to protect them from harm and that is what every child should have. Thank you Karen for sharing.
a sad story Karen but it happens quite often. we just had a father throw his 3 year old son off a bridge. But before that this other father threw all five of his children off a bridge to their death. Life stinks sometimes
PI novel set in Manhattan during the 1980s when art galleries and model agencies were the two most glamorous businesses in the world. Dangerously well written.
