They are long gone but they left their stories behind.

The Evidence was Overwhelming!

My husband and I were only married a short time when my Mother-in-Law and Father-in Law asked us to puppy sit their three dogs while they went on vacation. We loved their dogs and didn’t mind one bit. They had a collie named Lad, a Britney Spaniel named Lady and a Coon Hound named Bozo. Bozo wasn’t their dog; he just came for a visit and never left. He was in pretty bad health, too weak to bark and just lay around all the time. .

This was going to be fun since we haven’t setup housekeeping yet but were in the process of moving to Baltimore in two months to do so. This would kind of be a trial period for playing house.

Naturally, I wanted to impress my new husband with my culinary skills so I went to the grocery store and bought all of his favorite things, including everything I needed to make a homemade chocolate cake.

After about the second day, I had the house straightened and dogs fed so I decided it was time to bake that chocolate cake my mouth was watering for. It didn’t take me long to mix it and pop it in the oven, when I suddenly realized I didn’t have confectionary sugar for the icing. No problem, as soon as the cake was out of the oven and cooling on the racks, I would run to the store. Even though they lived in the country, there was a little corner store about two minutes away. So it was no problem at all!

I sat the two layers on cooling racks on the table, grabbed my wallet and off I went. I was only gone a few minutes so when I walked in, I was shocked to see both layers of the cake were gone. Not a crumb anywhere. “I bet my husband’s playing some kind of joke,” I thought. He was outside working on the horseshoe pits when I approached him accusingly. “No, I didn’t touch your cakes, I’ve been here the whole time,” he said.

Okay if he didn’t take them, who did, no one else is here. “Oh my, that’s not true ,” I thought, as Jim came running through the door with the same idea I had. THE DOGS! Both of us started calling them and looking through the house for them. We finally found Lad and Lady on the porch, still licking their chops with chocolate all over their guilty little faces. The evidence was overwhelming and THEY ATE THE WHOLE THING!

It was then we heard the loudest bellow we have ever experienced in our lives. It was Bozo telling us, he didn’t get any cake.  The very first time he ever said anything.

So very funny, but it is true of the dogs. Your poor hubby must of been stunned when you accused hime, being newlyweds and all. I have known dogs who ate a whole box of Chocolate, Kathy's dog, and one ate a whole submarine sandwich off the table and one ate a sock too. It is a joy to read short stories like this one. Great job.
