Louisiana is dismayed to learn that several of her friend's children have been taken away by the state; Kendra is being investigated.

Thurs., April 24, 2008, 7:24 a.m., C.S.T., Nashville, TN~

Dear Journal~

Louie here.  I'm afraid I'm not in the best frame of mind; I don't know when I've cried so much!

Nothing wrong on my end; my friend is hurting, and there's really nothing I can do about it (except, perhaps, to pray for a miracle).

Several of Kendra Kent's children have been taken into state custody while the state investigates her background, her capabilities as a mother.

Some people seem to think that just because she's in a wheelchair, she's not fit to be a parent, which is one of the most rediculous things I have ever heard of.

Kendra and her husband, Michael, are, as you can imagine, devastated.  I talked to them both yesterday; both were in tears; they could barely talk, they were crying so hard.  When I heard the news, I couldn't believe it.

Now I'm left here, feeling dry, empty inside.  I don't know why some people can't get past her wheelchair, not see the person I see.  Kendra is a very good mother; her children are well fed, cared for, and they are not lacking for anything, most importantly, love.

Now her youngest children are in foster care, and there's no guarantee that she will get them back.

I don't know why some people have to be so stupid, so prejudiced against people who are disabled!  This is old fashioned thinking; they need to look at the complete person, not just their disabilities!!

When I came in to work this morning, my boss could immediately tell that something was wrong.  I told him I'd work today, but may end up cutting out early, depending on what happens to Kendra.  I briefly told him what was going on with my friend without going into too much detail; he understood, said that it was okay if I left early.

Bill and the children have been on their faces in prayer, wailing, crying out to God for a miracle for Kendra.  My heart has been in constant prayer mode as well.  Our church family has been rallying around Kendra, offering encouragement, love, support.  If there's anything Kendra needs right now, it's a full blown miracle, right in front of everyone to see!!

Well, I have to get back to my patient (working in MICU today), so I'll go now.  I'm not fit for man or beast today; I'm an emotional basketcase!!

I will write in here again with more news about Kendra; hopefully things will get better for her!  Lord, I hope so; she needs a break!!  God bless and talk to you soon!

~Love, your friend, Louie. :(

Very revealing of a system that has problems that most people are unaware of. Also poignant in it's depiction of the pain it brings to the people it touches.
Thanks for this.

Ouch! I realize that there are those children who are in grave danger in their homes and need to be removed and put in a safer place (hopefully safer...but that is another topic about foster care), but... I hear of so many instances where the reason for taking the children from the home or for a family being investigated is that someone else thinks that they know better... So, not true in so many instances! It just makes me sad!

Good points made here. I think in a case like this, the handicapped person(s) who have a desire to become a biological or foster parent should be enrolled in a class first before deciding to have children or being appointed a foster child. They should be tested on various parenting skills to see if they are physically able to handle the care of a child. Cooking meals, washing clothes, and such that an ordinary family does. If they can show that their disability in no way hinders the caretaking of children, then they should be granted this right to a biological or a foster family. Say for instance, if a home was to catch on fire, could this handicapped person be physically mobile to get themselves and the children out of the burning home?? Thanks for the thoughts and musings today, Karen Lynn.

It angers me that some people can be so ignorant and not see the good in others. Thank you for keeping us informed karla, hope all works out.

This is absolutely horrible! The State needs to step back and ask some very relevant questions. Aside from the fact that Kendra is in a wheelchair. So what!

The children are obviously very loved, cared for and nurtured. The one question the State needs to ask themselves is: "Why now?"

The family has done quite fine up until now. So again, "Why now?"
This is truly heartrenching. I agree with Georg as well. Children are removed from loving homes only to be placed in homes with strangers who only care about the money with not a thought to the children and their happiness, security and love.

Is this not a case of prejudism??? Again, she's in a wheelchair. SO WHAT!! That chair has absolutely nothing to do with her heart.

God Bless you Karen

This is truly sad for Kendra--and for the children, I imagine. I guess the "system" has to have the last say in situations such as this. Good story.

I don't know how people can be so narrow minded and unfair. It's so sad. Hopefully one day...

Sounds quite ridiculous to me, and as Karla said, quite heartbreaking.

The Children and the Social Services should employ they time better investigating the "professional" foster parents that are paid by the state after benn "throughly" "investigated"
How many times there has been foster parents paid by the state that had totally neglected the children's needs and pocked the money?
I am utterlig disgusted.
