Dreams can come true
Vivid memories invaded her dreams, causing a violent rush of fear. She twitched and cowered as night terrors overtook her sleep. Memories of torturous pain, unprovoked beatings, and thunderous reverberations of foul verbal abuse haunted her. She relived the torment nightly in her dreams.
There had been pandemonium that fateful night. The bickering was the worst it had ever been. This time it was the woman who stormed out. The man was left alone in the cold, ominous house to take his anger and frustration out on her. Explosive outbursts from the man’s Jekyl-Hyde persona erupted like a volcano, culminating in a surreal scene. He pummeled her frightened face ruthlessly and began strangling her without remorse. Amidst the raucous howls of pain emitted from the house, a neighbor mercifully called the authorities. No wonder she cowered. She was only a year old when rescued from this life, finding temporary refuge with a foster family.
The foster family treated her well enough, but they were stretched thin in the attention-giving department. There was a mom, dad, teenaged girl, two young boys and a baby on the way. An overbearingly aggressive mongrel appropriately named Chaos, an old bulldog named Winston, three cats and a tortoise also lived there. No one had time to spend reassuring her that life could be so much better than the tragic existence she had been raised with.
All instincts told her something life-altering was about to happen as a buzz of anticipation filled the air at the foster home. The doorbell rang. A mom and teenaged boy arrived. Her vacant steel blue eyes cautiously watched the boy approach with a fidgety bundle of fur in his arms. The Yorkie he held squirmed desperately to get a look at her. Finally, wriggling free, the small dog ran to her. It was love at first sight as he started jumping excitedly, covering her with a multitude of doggy-kisses. Her eyes brightened, she almost smiled at this display of unconditional love to which she was so unaccustomed. The little dog’s tail wagged ecstatically. He snuggled close, offering an abundance of kisses to his new-found love.
The mom and the boy told her about all the fun they would have taking her to the park and playing together. The boy extracted a small stuffed toy from his pocket, offering it to her. The mother cuddled her, telling her how beautiful she was, that she was a good girl--words foreign to her. She looked up and smiled. A bond instantly formed. Loving her was so easy.
The boy eagerly slipped the leash onto her collar. “Do you like car rides, girl? We’ll take you to the dog park tomorrow. You’ll make lots of new friends there.” The boy pulled out a t-shirt that said “little sister” and slipped it over the Husky’s head. The Yorkie sidled alongside her, with his t-shirt “big brother”.
The family had grown once more. She was loved, part of a forever family.
