More musings from a lady with progressive muscular atrophy, and how her life continues to flourish, even despite overwhelming disability.

Lindsay Bauer here.  Sorry for not writing, but my allergies have really kicked me in the tail; haven't felt good in what seems like weeks.

I was in the hospital last month:  asthma attack.  I have never had one, and it scared the heck out of me.  I was out with my caretaker, and something got me going.  One minute I was talking; the next, I was gasping for air.  I thought I was having a heart attack.

Tracey got me to the emergency room, where I was given a shot or two, as well as some oxygen.  They diagnosed me as having bronchial asthma.  I now have to take an inhaler with me wherever I go; if I find my chest tightening up or start to have difficult breathing, I take a hit off my inhaler.  It usually helps.

I was in the hospital for a few days, so the docs could keep an eye on me.  It really threw me for a loop.  I have found out I'm allergic to cat hair, as well as pollen, strong perfumes, and penicillin.  I now take Albuterol whenever I have an attack of asthma.  If my breathing doesn't improve, I have to go to the emergency room.

Ever since the hospital stay, I've been trying to stay away from the allergens that give me the most trouble.  So far it's helped, but I have to be so careful: anything can get my asthma going!

Today, Tracey and I went to Golden Corral; had a good breakfast, but the lady in line in front of me had some overpowering perfume.  It set my asthma off.  I took my inhaler; she looked at me like I had horns growing out of my head.  Tracey told her that I was going to be okay in a few, which I was, but it made for some worried people!

I think the lady realized it was her perfume that caused me to start wheezing.  Once she left, I was okay in only a matter of minutes; I could breathe easier, much to my relief.

And the relief of Tracey and the people around me.

Still going to church every Sunday, Wednesday night.  Love it.  Also working now at NMH; got the job; am working as a medical assistant.  I work five days a week, Monday through Friday, from seven a.m. until 3 p.m.; off Saturday and Sunday.  That means my evenings are free (excepting on Wednesday, for church).  Perfect working hours!  I couldn't have asked for better hours!

I got my first paycheck yesterday; it will be gone before the week is out.  Gas and food prices have eaten up a good chunk of it, as do my other bills; I'll be lucky if I have $100 every week after bills!!

Well, I am giong to go:  am tired; am going to lie down.  Have been up since the crack of dawn; am getting sleepy all of a sudden!  I will write again soon; until then, take care and God bless!

Love, your friend, Lindsay Maureen Bauer.  :)

Allergies are the pits... My hubby and three of my kids have been sneezing and wheezing for a couple of weeks now. I guess that means Spring has finally come.

Enjoyed the update, I had two children in my classroom with severe asthma this year! It is a very scary disease! I have allergies and just a touch of asthma, my trouble is brought on mostly by smoke and mildew. I have little trouble with my allergies I take a singulair daily, with nasal spray and I'm good to go! I agree with Lindsay about the price of gas and food, it seems to be rising weekly. The prices at the grocery store are unbelievable! Coffee has gone up again here and produce is terribly high, I can't wait for our garden to begin producing fresh vegetable, I'll just have to live without the fruit...cantelopes are 3.99 this year and were only 1.00 last year. We are going to plant some this week if the rain will let up! Enjoyed the write my friend!

To have a disability in the body doesn't mean that one is also mentally disable, when are the world going to understand it and start being non judgmental humans?

I'm glad Lindsay's life is going rather well. You write so convincingly of medicine and therapies and symptoms, etc. You will earn a medical diploma of some sort soon. I'm sure! Cheers and keep going!!! We'll keep reading...

Many people with disabilities carry on with their lives just fine. As the old saying go, "I have a disability, but my disability doesn't own me. Fantastic, Karen.

You speak the truth. I know people with severe disabilities/diseases and they do choose to continue living, despite the pain/discomfort. I am proud to call them friends. And I am proud to call you a friend.

Karen,

An excellent update, sorry to hear Lindsay has asthma. :( At least she's learning to live with it, instead of it, living her ... well done.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
