I don't think I will ever get through the memories of that fateful day that changed my life as I knew it forever.
I still have nightmares: I still see, taste, feel, hear the events in my mind; I find myself tossing just about every night whenever I go to bed. I go to counseling every week, as a way of helping me get past the pain, the memories, the fear that the accident caused me. It's helped, but nothing like when I first encountered the life-changing encounter with God.
God's brought me through the fire. He's gotten me past the pain, the adjustment of living without my legs and one arm, and seeing that even though I am now severely physically handicapped, He still can use me for His glory, and now I share my story with others, as a way of trying to reach them with the gospel of Jesus Christ.
For a long while after the accident, I found myself having a very hard time of tryinig to forgive the guy who did this to me. Because of his poor decision-making, he decided to get behind the wheel of a car after getting tanked at a local dive. Because of his poor choices, the life I once knew--that of a high-powered attourney--is now history; I now work at a factory, trying to learn how to put pieces together with just one arm, or try to learn how to maneuver my wheelchair, even getting dressed, even doing something as basic as brushing my hair, my teeth, trying to get dressed, feed myself, taking care of my personal affairs without anyone's assistance.
I was dermined to wish this guy's soul into hell for all that he did to me; yet God showed me the power of Jesus's saving grace, and that He paid the ultimate price of dying on a wooden cross just for me. It was after I made the decision to accept His Son into my life when I finally learned how to forgive the man who made me into the person I am now. I learned how to love; more importantly, I learned to let go of the past, and I eventually learned how to heal in mind, body, and in spirit.
I now speak at schools, churches, and special Christian-based events, telling people my story of survival, and how God's been using me to reach the lost. I must be doing a pretty good job because every time I speak, there's always people at the altar, asking God to come into their lives. I don't know what it is, but I must be doing something right.
I pray this continues, and I pray my story, my very existance, reaches those who are hurting, those who need Christ the most in their lives.
