I don't think I'll ever bring myself to forgive Joey's teacher, not after what she did to him last week.
Because of what happened, I have pulled my son out of school; I will be looking for an alternative school for him, where he can get the extra one-on-one help he needs.
My son, Joey, who is seven, has fetal alcohol syndrome. He is small for his age, and he has accompanying physical/mental disabilities that hamper his ability to learn or function in life. He gets teased at school by the other children; he doesn't have any friends.
His teacher has been nothing but a thorn in my side. She won't help him, and she obviously feels very uncomfortable having him in her classroom. The other kids say he smells, and they call him retarded; this only causes him to come home from school in a torrent of tears.
He may be handicapped, but he knows when people are being nice or mean to him. He's not stupid.
The straw that broke the camel's back happened last week. Joey asked for help for a problem in math; I guess she decided she had enough of him, so she started calling him terrible, horrible names, right in front of the other kids. To make matters worse, she had Joey come to the front of the class, where she had the kids talk about why they shouldn't like him. The kids started laughing at him; she didn't do anything to stop it.
Now Joey sits here at home, feeling very bad about himself. He thinks he's the worst kid on the planet, and now he's talking about killing himself. He is only seven; I don't know where he's picked up such talk; however, it's scaring me to death!
I am in the process of looking for another school for my son because ever since he's been at the school he was attending, it's been nothing but one heartache after another.
I have all summer to look for a school who will be sensitive to his disabilities, a school that will treat him like he should be treated, and a school that will give him the opportunity to grow. Until then, I am sitting here, wondering how on earth that such an insensitive woman could have become my son's teacher.
She has caused my son irreperable damage that will take years to undo, and I don't think I can ever forgive her for what she's done to him--or to me. What she did was totally inexcusable!
I will write in here again, to let you know how my search goes. Take care; will talk to you again one day.
