It's funny how first impressions are not always the way we picture them.
Going Home
A few years back I was stuck in a train station on the east coast. I had just had a gig and was trying to get to New Jersey for my next gig the following night.
The train station was full of people waiting, just waiting. I went up to the ticket counter it was 11:09 pm. The ticket taker told me that the was wasn't going to be on time. Well I bought my ticket and walked on down the line to find a seat. A bag lady came over to me and asked me if I could spare a dime for some coffee. I gave ten bucks and told her to keep the change. He face lit up like a Christmas tree. Then this elderly gentleman came over to me and asked me where I was headed. Then asked me if I played the guitar or just had it for looks. I told him that I played it. I took my guitar out of it's case and started playing a tune for the man. Soon all the people started gathering around and I was playing for a crowd. It felt like I was at Carnege Hall. Soon I was buying ten cent coffee for everyone and playing music to the captivated audience. After I finished playing, I looked at that old man who was wearing a green sweater with wholes in it. I told him, "Well you heard all about me. Now tell me about yourself." He looked at me and a tear was in his eyes. He said, "Son, you ever been over to that park over there?" I said, "Many Times." He then said, "Well son, I designed that park and many of the building around it. My wife always wanted me to take her on trips. I did not matter where we were going, she just wanted to go. Well I was to busy with my work. She's been gone for some time now and I am retired. Every Saturday Night I come down to this train station and go on a little trip. It doesn't matter where I go." He then pulled out his wallet and showed me a picture of his late wife. He said, "Son, don't wait to late to do the things you need to do. Work can always wait. It is Life that goes on."
