I don't know how much more I can stand. Today was a bad day for me.
Nicholas, our four year old son with Canavan disease, just got out of the hospital not even a month ago, and last night, he had to go back in. Had severe stomach pains; turns out he had appendicits, had to have it removed.
In surgery, he had a seizure, then his heart stopped. We almost lost him; it was only by a miracle that he survived. Now he lies in the Pediatric Intensive Care, hooked up to tubes, and in a comatose state. It is unknown at this time whether he sustained further damage to his brain.
We've been at the hospital, taking turns. I stay in the day; hubby, meanwhile, takes the evening shift. We both wait, hope, pray Nicholas wakes up; so far, all he does is lie there, with only the beeps, hums, clicks of machines letting us know that he's still with us.
Doctors aren't sure whether he will pull out of this one, this latest crisis. He's had too many; he's in a weakened state.
Ellen and Renate, our other two children, are staying with their grammy and granpa while we hold bedside vigil with our baby boy. They know he is ill; they just don't know how ill. They think he will come home tonight; we tell them that he won't, as he is very sick; I tell them to pray for their little brother.
Poor Mother has been a dear in taking care of our girls whenever Nicholas is sick; I just wish I knew a way of how to repay her for all that she's done.
I don't know when I will write in here again, but if anything changes, I'll be sure to let you know. Just keep us in your prayers/thoughts; it is only going to take a miracle for little Nicky to pull through this crisis!
