On October 13, a 6-month old Mexican Grey Wolf cub was shot in the head as he stood on the side of a dirt road near Hannagan Meadow in the forests of Arizona (yes, we do have forests here).

Wow. I'm at a loss for words. What kind of person would shoot a wolf cub like this? (And I'm going to leave a certain politician out of this for the moment, because that's a discussion for a later blog). 

The only good news is that the AZ Game and Fish Department is seeking information about the shooting and offering a $10k reward. Pretty good money in this economy to lay out the idiot who would do something as cowardly as this. What will they face as a penalty for destroying an endangered species? The maximum is a $75,000 fine and a year in prison. I, for one, would RALLY to be on that jury... And I'm not someone who enjoys spending hours in an enclosed environment, so that's saying something. 

Here's the thing, folks. If we don't start stepping up to take care for our wildlife and our environment, the results will be deadly. People need to start getting over their ridiculous superstitious beliefs about the "inherent danger" of wolves, and this false feeling of entitlement to the earth's resources that we all share needs to stop - we are merely guests in a world that we have little control over. Call it the Butterfly Effect, Newton's law of motion or Chaos theory. Who really knows what the effect of shooting a wolf today will have on the world tomorrow?
