Mattaq Eegeesiak updates us on the fate of his younger sister, Sikik, who is in a nursing home due to worsening multiple sclerosis. Happily, she's doing a lot better.

Saturday, November 8, 2008, Anchorage, Alaska, 5:05 a.m.~

Dear Journal~

Mattaq Eegeesiak here.  Sorry for not writing sooner; I'm exhausted from working, running to/from the nursing home to visit Sikik.  I hope you understand.

I am happy to tell you that my sister is doing much better since my last visit with her.  It turns out that the staff was overmedicating her; this is what gave her the troubling symptoms I described in my last journal entry.  She is now sitting up unassisted again in her wheelchair, even eating a little.  She still doesn't talk much, but her face is more animated, full of life; it is most encouraging to see.

I see glimpses of the old Sikik emerging, and it's enough to make me want to fly up clear to the Northern Lights!!

Whereupon, I am in a much better frame of mind.  Tired, yes, but definitely most encouraged at the change in my sister's mental/physical status.  Maybe we will get back home to Barrow sooner than expected; I sure hope so!  I know Sikik misses Barrow terribly (as do I)!

I pray this upturn in her health continues!  Maybe she won't get back to walking again, but at least I or some of our other brothers/sisters can assist me in caring for her.  We can at least do that for her, and be supportive of each other!

Maybe Sikik can even get back to writing in her journal again, or if not her, one of us, let one of us be her "voice".  We know how she is, so we can at least let her friends know just how she is doing, even though she may not be able to tell them herself.  I can be her mouthpiece, as it were.

I just wish Sikik could do more for herself; it's frustrating to see her lying there, not being able to do anything.  She looks like a little wounded bear cub; it about breaks my heart!  She's always been tiny anyway; she now resembles a small child, she's gotten that thin.  It's heartbreaking!

Well, I will go now.  Have to go to work, working here temporarily while in Anchorage, that way we can have some money saved up for when we return back home to Barrow.  I don't know when I will write in here again, but hopefully it will be soon; and hopefully Sikik will continue to improve, or better yet, be home, where she belongs!

May the Great Spirit bless you!

~Mattaq.  :)

Multiple Sclerosis affects hundred of thousands around the world, Many times I wonder if a trillon dollars for a stupid unnecessary war shouldn't have done better been used in health research for treatment and medicines out of reach of Pharmaceutical Corporates but available free of charge to those suffering?
Just a silly thought.

It's good news and you're right, a facial expression can and does tell us much about the person. Be nice to visit Alaska, wouldn't it? (but in July) :)
