Danny woke early. The sun was rising, red—red like fire. His hope was that Jimmy finally came through with a good piece of writing. It had been a long time since he had been able to sell anything. Maybe this typewriter he found would bring some luck. Danny looks at the sun and remembered the old saying, “Red sky in morning, sailors take warning.”

Danny wanders toward the window, curious about the sunrise.

A prism of colors dance on the wall behind him.

"I could almost put this to music, Jimmy should see this! Maybe
it would give him some inspiration to write something good. Damn fool, thinks this time will be the charm!", Danny stretches and yawns and heads toward the kitchen, switching on the light.

The kitchen table is cluttered with last nights coffee cups and
plates.

"I sure hate to wake up to dirty dishes! It was Jimmy's turn! Too busy dreaming I guess! Well, I ain't doing them! I need
coffee now!" Danny curses silently.

Collecting up the pile of dishes, he quickly turns around,
not seeing the pile of toys on the floor and trips over
the cuddly giraffe, landing on his behind. Cups and saucers go crashing, splinters of good china go everywhere.

Danny remains still for a moment, not sure if he was pissed off at Jimmy or himself. He let out a shout aimed at Jimmy.

"Jimmy, you son of a bitch! Get down here! Get away from your
"writing" and pick up this mess! I am on the floor in the middle of the kitchen, surrounded by a sea of my best china and now its broken all over the kitchen floor!  Of course I am barefoot! Get down here now!!"

Silence resonates in the kitchen. Danny is boiling mad!

In the middle of the broken cups and saucers, lies a cuddly toy giraffe, almost mocking him.

Minutes went by. Finally, Danny hears footsteps coming into the kitchen.

"Oh cute, Danny! You want to wake up the whole neighborhood?
Get a grip! I was up late last night writing and I needed some coffee. Is that such a crime? You should see yourself, Danny!
What a laugh! Get up. Wow!! Look at this sunrise!!

It's worth getting up this early and your shouting is a blessing
in disguise! "

"This is great ! I know what to write about!! I will write about you!! You son of a bitch! You gave me the push I need and
that old beat up Smith Corona will be my vehicle to writing
that novel I always wanted to write. The effect that typewriter has on me is uncanny, even with the worn out ribbon and the faded keys. I feel like I have something to say and I am going to say it!", Jimmy smiles as he squats down by Danny and helps him back to his feet.

"Watch the glass! You have no shoes on. You might get cut!", Jimmy whispers as he guides him to a chair.

Walking over to the broom closet, Jimmy gets out a broom and dustpan and sweeps up the glass.

"How about making some coffee, Danny? I sure could use some!"

"You want it? You make it. I wouldn't be flat on my ass
if you would have washed the dishes last night!"

"Why are you so pissed at me, Danny? What did I ever do to you?"

"Jeez, Jimmy. Let me make a list! How about you sponging off me for the last year. You said you only needed a place to crash for a month or two to get an idea for your "novel"!! You've been here for a year, no job, no novel just a bunch of rejection slips
cluttering your room and pizza boxes! Get a life, Jimmy and
I give you one week to write a story or you are out of here!"

"Sick of me, huh? Well, you are no picnic either! Your poker parties and smoking drives me nuts too! I must sound like a nag but you are a complainer. I really feel like this story is in me, Danny! Just trust me this time. I will show you!"

"You are so full of it, Jimmy. Haven't I heard that story before. Oh I have

a story in me, Danny. Yeah, sure you do!"

"Just trust me this time, Danny. I will show you."



"Just look out the window. What a gorgeous morning! Don't let your sour mood spoil this. I won't let you! Danny. You probably won't ever understand my dream or my novel. I will write about you and maybe you will see how you treat people and maybe its you that needs to take a second look out that window and find a little beauty in the world, instead ofalways trying to find something wrong with people. You go against the flow of life, instead of with it."



" You probably won't undertand it, like you don't understand beauty, truth and even the silly toys on the floor, but maybe someday you will."

Danny just looked out the window.

"What do you see that I don't see, Jimmy?".

"I see life, Danny and life can be beautiful! You just have

to get up at sunrise a few morning to really appreciate it..."
