A young boy who had meningitis continues to make strides against all odds placed upon him by doctors. He got sick a year ago this time; the family has plenty to be thankful about this Thanksgiving.

Bryson Blake, my seven-year-old son, is a living little miracle.  Every time I look at him, I can't help but cry with sheer happiness; God's blessed our family by letting him live, by letting him survive the affects of meningitis that could have very easily killed him.

It was one year ago at this time when he became sick.  For a while, doctors didn't think he'd live; he was comatose, unresponsive, with only tubes, machines keeping him alive.  It is only by God's grace that he's still here, with all his senses intact.

This is Gladys, his mom.  Gladys Humphries.  I now have two beautiful children, my miracle-boy, Bryson, and our other child, our nearly-five-year-old daughter, Hannah Blaire.  God's really been good to us.  When Bryson was so sick, our church family kept in constant prayer; it is the prayers and support from my church that's kept my faith, our family, going; and I firmly believe that it was their prayers that is the catalyst to little Bryson being alive, even when doctors didn't offer us any hope.

Now Bryson is getting around, on one crutch now, terrorizing the cat, as well as his little sister.  He doesn't mean to be mischevious; but you know how little boys are:  full of spunk, adventure.  LOL  Hannah will cry for him to stop tormenting her, and then I will have to put Bryson into the crying chair in the corner, until he thinks about what he's done, or learns how to behave himself (whichever comes first! LOL).  He needs to take responsibility for his actions; I will not allow him to act up like he does!

Other than that, he's a good little boy:  doing well in his schoolwork, getting tutored in the areas that give him trouble (reading comprehension, math, spelling; the meningitis left him with some learning disabillities as well as some speech difficulties; he stutters now when he talks).  Sometimes the kids tease him, which breaks my heart every time; he tries so hard!!

Sometimes my son will come home from school in tears; this is when I take him into my arms, comfort him, kiss the tears away.  I tell him to ignore the teasing; the bad kids don't know just how special he really is, and that they're only jealous of him.  That usually does the trick--that is, until the next time it happens.

Hannah is doing well in preschool; in fact, the school teachers are thinking of her getting tested because they think she's gifted.  She is incredibly bright, quick to learn, and is a born little performer who loves to sing, dance.  She is very good at what she does; we are very proud of her!

Now it's been one year since Bryson became sick, and now a year later, he's walking, talking, doing just great!  It's hard to believe that our lives were once filled with fear, uncertainty; now it's full of God's many blessings, joy, and of course, miracles that were totally unexpected!  We thank God every day for Bryson, that he's still alive, that he's still plugging away!

Well, the kids are at it again; seems that they never stop finding new ways to torment each other!  Looks like the wailing wall is about to do a booming business again!  *Sighhh*  I will write in here again soon; until later, take care, have a most blessed, happy, safe Thanksgiving, and talk to you again soon!

~Love, your friend, Gladys Humphries.  :D

Heard about one case of Meningitis that went under the radar in a school, by the time they caught it fifteen children were infected and three died. Specially hurtful was because vaccines were available but "it can't happen to me" or/and fear of by-effect prevented parents to protect they children (in this time and age!)

Meningitis is such a scary thing...
It moves in quickly and is so often deadly. So glad that Bryson defied the odds.

As ever, this totally lifts my heart, Karen, especially as I have similar tales to tell of my own life and experience! I love the interweaving of the lively humanity (naughtiness!) with the wonderful sacredness of the miraculous and it brings faith and experience into close association in amongst the joys and tribulations of our very real lives. A beautifully rounded write that reminds me of the ups and downs of Louisa Alcott's Little Women. My heart warms and bleeds simultaneously. Another fine documentary, thank you... AND HAPPY THANKSGIVING! :)) xx

Karma Bank to Following By Listening by Chiemi

These song lyrics and art are tales, tides and twinkling lights - tunes telling stories of warmth and sun, city and sand, paths that lead, and the coins we can keep in the Karma Bank. Spirit's been bypassed for sorrow, dreaming of a better tomorrow .
