Of the seasons of the year, I guess I like summer the best. One reason is because it's the time of year when there is no school, and I don't have to worry about homework or other kids teasing me.
This is Johnny Sandusky. I am 9 1/2 years old. I'll be ten in December.
Summer is also the time where we go on vacations or perform some weekends. (Mommy and daddy have their own band, and a lot of the kids sing in the band or play music. I play the piano, and I also play the fiddle or the Cajun accordion; but I mainly sing.) We have gone to some pretty interesting places, like to Washington D.C., New York City (where I had been raised until I was adopted [we went just before the terrorist attacks of last year; I saw the World Trade Centers, and they were sure BIG!!]),
the Grand Ole Opry (we go to the Opry several times a year), Fan Fair (which is where country music stars and their fans get together for a week of shows, autographs, and lots of fun), and the Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival, which is in Louisiana, near Lafayette.
I also like summer because I can sleep in and not worry about getting up so early so I can get ready for school! That is always nice. During the summer I don't get out of bed until 9 or 10, but on Sundays we still get up at 6:30, so we can get ready for church and go out to eat at the Golden Corral beforehand. We than go back to the Golden Corral for lunch and then go back to the church for the evening service. But on the other days I sleep in.
Summer also means doing what I want. I can go to Jose' 's house, or I can play with my games or look at my Poke'man cards, or I can read or watch tv. (I like Nickolodeon and Cartoon Network.) I also can play with my brothers and sisters, or draw or paint or just be lazy if I want. That is good because sometimes doing homework is nothing but a big drag!!
I also like summer because the weather is hot and often sunny (athough you CAN get some NASTY thunderstorms that pop up unexpectedly, and then we're trying to get out of the soaking rains!), and I love to go swimming in our pool or go to the water park and slide down the big slide they have there and then hit the water with a big (((SPLASH!!!!))). But what I DON'T like about summer is the fact that there are mosquitos that bite like crazy and leave big old red welts all over, and I also don't like the fact that I sunburn so easily and can't go outside until I put on my sunscreen; or else I end up turning red like a big old crawfish. I often wish I could tan like Ronee' or Jeraldo or Barbara. That must be SO nice not to worry about whether you are going to turn red whenever you go out in the sun!!!
I also love summer the best because it's the time for July 4th, and I love the fireworks, parades, picnics, and stuff that goes along with it; and I also love it when it's the last day of school. I also love summer because it means Little League for me and my friends. (I am on a team for disabled kids; we are called "The Challengers", and all of us are disabled. Some are on crutches, and some--like me--are in wheelchairs; and some are blind or deaf.) I really love playing baseball!! I am really good at pitching; and I am also good at catching foul balls.
But what I probably like the BEST about summer is the fact that I am with my family. I also like spending the extra time with my friends (in particular, Jose', who is about the greatest guy I know!). That is why I like summer the best out of the four seasons, because it is COOL.
This book was written for children to stress the importance of being able to choose who gets to hug or touch them and being able to say NO if they don't want to be hugged or touched.
