Someone is hiding in the hidey-hole located in my bedroom because they are afraid they are about to get into trouble from mommy and daddy. I hear little gasping whimpers enamating from the corner of the one wall, nearest my bed, where it is dark and comforting.
I look under the dark area of my bed, and in the dim light I see two bright, tear-filled eyes and a small, tear-streaked face.
It is Tri. He is clutching something in his hand.
I gently, but calmly, try to coax my little brother from out of the hidey hole. He refuses to budge at first.
"Come on, Tri," I say. "It's okay. I'm not the one who is mad at you." Tri doesn't answer. I go on. "Now can you kindly come out of there and tell me just what in the devil is going on here?" Slowly, but deliberately, Tri works his tiny body from the hidey hole. He is clutching a broken plate in one grubby little hand. His hand is bleeding, but he doesn't seem to notice it.
"Aww, Tri! It's okay!" I say to my brother. "Why are you holding a broken dish for?"
"Cause I bwoked it, and now I be in twouble! I am gonna get it fwom mommy and daddy!" he howled. "I bwoke the dish cause I was twying to get it away fwom Sun-Hee!"
It didn't seem very funny to Tri, but as for me, I started laughing. Sure, Tri cut himself (nothing serious, and nothing that iodine and a small "bang-aid" wouldn't cure!), but the incident was very minor, and it wasn't life-threatening. It was just a part of kids being themselves and getting into mischief. (It turned out that Tri and Sun-Hee wanted hotdogs that maman had made earlier, and they were getting plates. Well, it seemed that Tri wanted the pink plate that Sun-Hee had, and in his struggle to get it away from her, he accidently broke it and managed to nick himself on the palm of his hand.)
"Now you KNOW you are going to have to tell mommy you broke the plate, now, don't you?" I questioned my little brother. With a solemn nod, Tri nodded his head; he knew he was in trouble, and he began to cry. But at the same time he knew it was also wrong to tell a lie, and he would have to tell his parents the truth. And if he lied he would be in a lot more trouble than he would be in once his mommy and daddy found out about the broken plate in the first place!!
Dedicated with *MUCH LOVE!* to Karla who broke a plate of mom's and managed to hide it--in daddy's Korean War memorabelia, for fear she would get into trouble!!--, and daddy didn't know about it until 2 years later when he got a bit nostalgic and found the busted plate in the middle of his memorabelia!! Poor Karla immediately broke out in a cold sweat as she recalled the time of hiding the plate; but by then, it was far too late for her to get into trouble!! Luv you, Karla!! (((HUGS)))--Karen Lynn. (Didn't YOU wish YOU had a "hidey-hole" to hide in when you broke the plate??)
Naaah...I hid the plate, 'cause I figured I wouldn't get into trouble...Daddy *never* looked through that box...I forgot after a while...but instantly remembered breaking it when Daddy pulled it out of his box of memorabelia! Heat galvanized all over my body...*busted*! Thank God I didn't get into trouble...all Daddy asked me was why I didn't tell him when I broke it in the first place. (Are ya KIDDIN--6'tall, 250 pounds was rather intimidating to a young kid like me!!). Thanks for the memories...(((HUGS))) Love, Karla. (GREAT write!!) :)
