Arturo Jiminez is having major problems in his life. He got suspended in school for fighting, and his grandmother has fallen ill with a stroke.

Ay, caramba!

I don't know what's worse:  knowing my abuela being so sick, or knowing that I won't be able to return to school until Wednesday at the earliest.  Got into a fight with a kid who picked on me one too many times about my Mexican-ness; had more than enough, so I beat the holy s*** outta him, the little weasel!

The fight happened on Thursday, Thursday afternoon, while waiting for the bus.  It was a kid from the upper grade; he's been buggin' me for a while now, calling me "Wetback", "Beaner", and other racial slurs.  I'd held it in for as long as I could; but Thursday he was especially vicious; so I let him have it, both barrels.

That's when assistant principal O'Malley walked in.  I immediately got carted off to the office, where I got my ass chewed out by Principal Richardson; that was when I got handed this suspension until I could learn to behave myself (those were his exact words to me).  He made me feel like a stupid little kid.

Then that night, while eating supper, my granny slumped over her plate.  Scared us slap stupid.  I thought shd'd fainted or had a heart attack.  I called for the ambulancia while my mami and papi stayed with her.  They were as scared as I was, probably even more so.  It was totally unexpected.  Now she lies in the ICU at a local hospital, fighting for her life; the medicos, they don't know if she is going to live or die.  Right now, everything's touch and go.

Since I'm not at school right now, we go to the hospital, to see my granny.  She lies there in the Intensive Care room, hooked up to tubes, her life flashing on monitor screens, a breathing machine breathing for her.  She looks muy malo, very bad; it looks like she's dying, and it has all of us worried to death.

We only see her for fifteen minutes at a time every two hours.  I hate it because we talk to her; yet she doesn't move, doesn't open her eyes; you can feel the spector of death in the room.  It's awful!  Then between visits, I have to sit in the waiting room, trying to find ways to amuse myself, but not really wanting to, because my thoughts are back in the Intensive Care unit, with Abuela.

When I'm not at the hospital, I'm holed up in my room, where I have to think of what I'd done on Thursday.  Well, I'm not the least bit sorry:  the stupid gringo, he had it coming to him!!  The stupid principal, he can kick my ass out of school; I don't care; I hate it there!!

I'd much rather be in the boxing ring or with mi amigos than sitting in a hot, stuffy classroom that smells worse than shit!!

Mami and papi, they aren't going to be too happy with what I say here, but I don't care.  I just wish they'd leave me the f*** alone, let me do as I want!  I'm a teenager now, practically an adult; I'm old enough to take care of my own damn self!!

Well, I've managed to make myself cry yet again, so what else is new?  My life, it's a total fuck-case right now; I'd be better off dead!!

Well, there's one thing that we didn't went through in California, and that was to be mean with other children.
We had Mexicans and chicanos (Mom and Dad from Mexico, children born American) others Latinos, three or four Jews and believe or not a few Japanese (not really, third of four generation, but keeping their marriage on Japanese bounds)
All the kids of my class were bilingual English/Spanish.
So, no racial slurs around around us.

People that are so prejuciced really upset me. There are alot of young people that are affected by this behavior. I wish they could put themselves in the other persons shoes for a day and feel how hurtful it is to be picked on like they do then maybe it would open their eyes. A very good work.

The torment of life is never easy to deal with, when you are on the receiving end of it. How come the guilty are never punished, or if they are, the innocent are always brought low with them. Sorry you have suffered, but don't give up. Persevere and eventually it willend. Then the questions of life only get harder, but you can do it.

NO: Arturo is not better off dead. He's just an angry young man, trying to make it in a cold, cruel world. An excellent write, Karen.
