Summer here. I'm writing to update you on the situation involving my little sister, Ramey Melissa, who is still in the hospital's intensive care as I write this.
As you know, Ramey suffered a stroke nearly two weeks ago. It was a bad one. According to her neurologists (and other doctors), she may never fully recover; she may always have some form of disability. At this time, she still isn't speaking, nor is she moving her one side: she remains paralyzed.
Ramey is awake, but she isn't really there or aware of what's happened to her or what's really going on. It's very troubling to see her like this; she is totally helpless, and right now, her future is still in doubt. She will recover; it will just take a very long time.
Now, she could recover, according to Dr. Stryker, but how much, that's the question right now.
Dr. Stryker did tell us about two children he took care of who had strokes, but they recovered; both are doing beautifully. He said it could happen, but more often than not, most people don't recover fully from massive strokes; there will always be some form of deficits resulting from them.
Ramey is off the ventilator; she's now getting oxygen through little prongs in her nostrils, and she's still hooked up to the IV, nose hose, pee tube, poop tube. She is unable to get out of bed on her own. She's been receiving physical therapy practically nonstop; it's hard to hear her crying as the therapists manipulate her limbs, to try to get them moving again.
We don't know how long she will be in the hospital (probably another week or two), but afterwards, she will probably go to the rehabilitation clinic, where she will learn how to do things one handed or how to get around by wheelchair, among other things. She faces a very long recovery period.
I will write in here again soon; we are leaving for the hospital now to see my sister. Hopefully Dr. Stryker or any of the doctors will have more good news about her; I certainly hope so! She really could use a miracle about now, as could all of us!
