Howdy! Summer Parkingham here.
Thought I'd write in here with an update on my little sister, Ramey Melissa.
As you know from past entries, Ramey's been in the hospital because she had a stroke. It was a bad one; it left her one side paralyzed and left her without speech. We were really scared; we thought for a minute we were going to lose her.
Well, I'm happy to tell you that Ramey's out of Intensive Care; she's in a regular room! And best of all, she's even eating again! Not a lot, mind you, but at least she can take food by mouth; that ugly feeding tube in her nose is now history!
Right now, she still remains paralyzed and doesn't talk; however, she does understand. She can blink her eyes (once for yes, twice for no) as a way of communicating, and her face is becoming more animated. There doesn't appear to be as much damage as was once thought.
Her doctors are pleased at her progress; so are her therapists. Again, we don't know how long she will be in the hospital, but compared to where she was a little over two weeks ago, when she first became sick, she's come an awfully long way!
For the first time in days, I actually feel like singing and going to school, instead of living them at the hospital, like I've been. I am actually returning to my old life instead of constantly worrying about my sister (although she's never very far away from my thoughts).
I just wish she could walk or talk again; it bothers me seeing her lying there in her bed. I'm just glad that she doesn't have all the extra tubes in or on her like she did!
(She still has the pee and poop tubes and one IV, as well as the oxygen thingie in her nose, but at least she's off the heart monitor and the extra IV's!)
Today her doctor is going to put Ramey on soft foods; if she can tolerate that, she will be going to the rehab hospital (probably tomorrow or the next day). I hope so; she really put us through our paces these past two weeks!
God has been with us through all of this; even when we felt that He wasn't, He was. He brought her through the fire, and has given us a miracle. He gave us our loved one back!
I am so happy right now I feel like hugging every person I see, especially her doctors or nurses; they took such wonderful care of her! I actually feel like singing or dancing!
