There are rumors about Miss Maureen, the teacher from Room 128 in the schoolyard, but only young Cyrano challenges the rumor and this is what happens next. A silly story ! I hope you like it. :)

A writing exercise. feedback welcome.

Miss Maureen sees all! It is rumor around the schoolyard that in
her younger days, she was a carnie. She travels by rail from
Chicago to San Fran and to all points west!

"I travel light and with my trusty ruler!"

Her famous show was the talk of every town!

Sitting in a lone chair in the middle of the stage, she is quite
a presence. A single stage light shines down on her.

"May we ask for a moment of silence so Miss Maureen can
concentrate.

She places the golden ruler on her forehead, takes a deep
breath and silence reigns for a moment.

She starts to speak

"I see a room far far away

it is a room of mischief, headed by

a singular rogue...

a vagabond, a ruffian, a lighthearted fool...

A tomato hits her in the face

"Fake! Charletan! Phony!"

"Not me! I know all ! I see all! I am Miss Maureen! Someday

even the children will quake in their shoes when I

rise up my ruler!"

More tomatoes...

Years later, sitting in her classroom, Miss Maureen ponders

that terrible night and the ruler rises once more.

She waves her hand, snaps her fingers

And candy falls like rain in the classroom...

Pandemonium!

All the children run around like mice trying
to catch all the candy!!

But the cleverest of all is the young rogue

Cyrano, for he sat and reached into his nap sack, pulled

out a bag and let the candy fall inside. Quickly filling

with the little treats!

"Yes, it is I, Cyrano, the back seat terror, of Room

128, that is the ruler's best friend! My fingers know the

"sting" of the ruler.

"Just candy, Miss Maureen? I heard the old stories
about you as a "carny"! My grandfather used to be
in the audience!"

"Oh really?", says Miss Maureen.

"Yeah! Maybe this will jog your memory!"

He reaches in his bag and pulls out a tomato.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you, Cyrano.

I am Miss Maureen, and my class is not boring! I

can make it rain candy but I am no pushover! Don't push

me young Cyrano!"

"Now, Cyrano, to the principal's office, NOW!"

"Make me!"

"I can, don't test me. I am Miss Maureen."

"Make me!"

Miss Maureen waves her golden ruler in the air and

young Cyrano gets up from his seat at the back of the class,

takes a leap toward the wall and sticks to it.

"What the heck?", he screams.

"Okay class. Now, let it rain tomatoes, but sideways,

at young whippersnapper..."

"Remember this is Miss Maureen's class."

"Where the tomato is Queen!"

You're right, Katie. It's a bit off the way. Or in Cyrano's case,
on the wall. I think you succeeded with your exercise. You should
do more of this kind of writing. -gene.
