Oh many the pint fellow sailors shared with Spencer McNally. A sea faring rogue
whose wanderlust of the ocean call him from ports of call along the seven seas.
A writing exercise starting with
the phrase..."red sea at morning, sailor
take warning" and trying to add
the sights, sounds, tastes and feel
of the ocean 's special meaning to
this complicated man.
The writer stares at the blank screen of her computer.
Armed only with one sentence to guide her.
The sun came up over the mountain that sheltered the old cabin. “Red sky in morning, sailors take warning.” Jim had been a sailor—in the day. Now he needed time alone. He had come all these miles to think—to remember—to make decisions.
"Jim? Who the hell do I know with this name? A sailor? No sailor
I know is named Jim! Scratching out that name, she replaces
it with a classic sea name, "Spencer McNally"!
"Now that's a sea name! Aaaargh, me maties!!"
"I can smell the sea air now!"
"Spencer McNally must be a kind of black-hearted varmint. He
must run away to sea to escape some heartache or shame. Perhaps
a lost love or just the call of the ocean tide lulls him
to desire the rush of the sea waves taking him to destinations
unknown. Not a man to stay put. Spencer lives for the moment
tasting life today, but keeping his distance from making
any close friendships. The sun and sea are his companions
and the challenge is to survive the day against the fickle
ocean that is merciless and spouts its wrath like a jealous
lover.
Spencer respects the ocean and is always amazed at the
beauty of the sunsets that seem to dip into the ocean depths
like the sun dissolves into nothingness.
"I swear I can hear the sun sizzle from the cold of the ocean
as it says goodnight to me, disappearing into tomorrow...What
wonder lie in the night become a mystery to me. I love
not knowing tomorrow!", Spencer wants to stay at sea
forever, escaping whatever pain the land
brought to him, no luck in life, but challenge at sea
Well done, Katie, says this old sea dog, having spent many a
trecherous day (and night) in the Pacific during WW2, a period in my young life I still remember with affection despite the war. The sea continues to flow in me veins, matie. -gene.
