...Mi misi in ascolto: il vento tremolante frusciava come una serpe. Mi arrampicai con fatica alla sottile fessura del muro; scorsi un brandello di cielo: sulle cime degli alberi nereggianti la luna irradiava una luce argentea.  Silenzio era tutt’intorno. Una nuvola passo’ dietro il pinnacolo dei rami piu’ alti e poi si inabisso’.  Reclinai il capo: sotto di me era il miserabile giaciglio, i miei stracci consunti, la lurida latrina, qualche oggetto insulso per la cura della mia inutile persona.

   Mi coricai e al buio mi guardai le mani fratricide. Mi sovvenne il ricordo del fiotto di calore che venne ad esse quando, serrato il collo della mia vittima,  presi a stringere con foga la sua gola e il suono sordo del cedere dei nervi e delle ossa della nuca. Mi misi in piedi scosso da un fremito di terrore; mi parve che l’oblio fosse l’unica possibilita’ di espiazione. Mi aggrappai al legno della porta come a una scialuppa in torbide acque tormentate. Sentii intimamente l’assenza di qualunque dio e follemente derisi l’idea stessa di una qualche sua possibile e remota esistenza. Il corpo mi peso’ indicibilmente: le mani eran mani, le gambe e le braccia eran braccia e gambe, e la testa testa. Sangue circolava da qualche parte; sangue rosso, sangue versato, sangue raggrumato e perduto.

    La porta cedette sotto il molle peso delle mie spoglie di morto e si spalanco’. La luna in cielo con la sua luce mi benediceva, come una qualunque creatura della terra, come i sassi, come le fronde degli alberi, i tronchi, i ceppi nella terra negra. Mi volsi per un istante verso il basso tugurio della mia prigione, poi mi misi in cammino: la radura cedeva spazio ad arbusti e pini marittimi e declinava. Presi un sentiero scosceso che conduceva ad una ripida scogliera cui innanzi si apriva la vastita’ del mare. La’ in basso le acque ruggivano e percuotevano spumeggiando le bianche rocce. Un vento odoroso di sale e pregno di umidita’  tirava furioso verso la terra agra...
