Dear Journal~

Mary Elaine Maxwell here. How are you this fine holiday weekend?  We are doing well, thank you for asking.  Even Caleb, our little son with special needs, is doing wonderful; we can't be happier!  :)

We are at the local park as I write this:  our family is enjoying a day out of the house; figured it was high time all of us got some needed fresh air and sunshine! 

Celeste and Corinthe, our two daughters, are playing on the swings, and Caleb, our youngest (and only son) is sitting in his wheelchair, laughing to beat the band.  He hears the cheerful song of a cardinal; this is what makes him so happy.  He loves to hear the birds singing; it's one of his favorite sounds in the world.

Thank God Caleb can still hear!  He may not see, speak, or walk, but he can hear everything that is going on:  his little ears don't miss a trick!

People have been coming up to us, talking to us about our son.  More often than not, people have been sweet and kind; some, however, ask personal questions that I think are too irrevelent to me.  I just try to be nice, nod my head, and let them go on their way, trying not to be bothered by their insensitivity.

Such as life when you have a child like Caleb.  As you know, Caleb has Batten's disease, which has caused increasing disability (and demands on our part); yet he remains the same sweet, loving little boy we've always known; nothing really upsets him.  He just takes life one day at a time, no worries.

He has such a happy attitude.  Oh, if we could all be deep thinkers like Caleb; he may not communicate with his voice, but his emotions, facial expressions speak volumes!  He is very good at making his needs known!  He is a lot smarter than what most people give him credit for!

Well, Celeste and Corinthe want us to join them on the swing set, so we are going to get Caleb and join our daughters.  I hope you have a very  happy holiday weekend and remember our brave military men and women; this is why we really celebrate Memorial Day weekend!  Have fun, and above all, stay safe!

I will write in here again when time permits.  Seems that time is something I am sadly lacking of!  LOLOLOL  Hope you understand!  God bless and take care!
