Young Brooklyn Wright writes about her father and what he means to her.

My name is Brooklyn Wei Wright.  I live in Nashville, Tennessee, with my mommy, daddy, sisters Promise Hope (she's my age, which is six!) and Sue Ellen (Emily) Xai, and my brothers Mwugu and Rheese.  Rheese is the youngest; he's only a baby, and is into everything!

I have a very nice family.  I especially love my daddy.  Daddy is in a wheelchair; he was born with paralyzed legs and can only walk for short trips on a pair of crutches.  Sometimes he falls, which always scares me.  Sometimes he gets sick and has to go to the hospital, where doctors and nurses fix him up.  This is always a scary time; I'm always scared he's going to die!

Even with being handicapped, daddy can do just about anything he wants to do.  He plays golf, he drives, he works at the hospital (he's a doctor; he's the kind that puts people to sleep before they are operated on), he sings in the church choir every Sunday, and he takes care of us, his family.  He's really cool!

Mama loves our daddy very much; in fact, she isn't bothered by his problems.  She is very happy to help him out whenever he gets stuck or has to go to the hospital or doctor's office.  She helps him get dressed, makes sure he takes his pills (and drinks plenty of water!), checks his bag (he can't pee like you or I can), and makes sure he doesn't have any bruises or sores on his legs (these can cause trouble if he isn't more careful).

Mama is very patient with my daddy.  And daddy is very patient with her, and us kids.  He never yells at us or spanks us; if he does get angry, he gives us a dirty look and makes us sit in "time out" until we learn our lessons or think about what we have done, so we don't do it again!

Daddy has one sister, Audrey, who lives far away.  I miss her; we hardly see her, not like we used to.  She used to live in Mississippi, but a hericane (spelling?) chased her out, and she's been through a lot of bad things in her life.

He just found out about her last year.  Y'see, daddy is adopted.  He was given up because his real mommy (Audrey's mom) didn't want to have a baby who was handicapped, so he was chosen by another family.  I think that's really cool because I'm adopted too.  I was adopted when I was a baby from China.  Except I don't remember any of that other than what I've been told by my mommy and daddy.

Maybe one day we'll go to China, so I can see where I came from.

I think that would be neat!!

Well, I gotta go to bed, so I will go.  I hope you enjoyed my story about my daddy and my family.  I may write in here again, but it's harder than it looks!  It takes too long; there's too many words for me to come up with or remember!  Until later, this is Brooklyn Wei Wright saying bye!  God bless you!

~Love, your friend in Tennessee, Brooklyn Wei Wright, aged six years.  :)

Soldiers and sailors make the strangers fathers there is, but now and then a daughter or a son will tell you about the love for their father.
The ones that got to hear it are the blessed ones.

What a beautiful father's day message, Karen. I hadn't thought of some of the challenges (and joys) of special needs parenting. Thank you.
