Julie Jessika Torres, thirteen, updates us on the status of her mother, who, sadly, remains in a coma.

July 3, 2009~

Julie Jessika Torres here.  Thought I'd let you know how things were going for us, in particular, my mami, who remains in the hospital, fighting for her life.

Sadly, things aren't any better.  Mom remains in a coma; her vital signs are (relatively) stable, but she isn't showing any signs that she is emerging from the coma.  I feel nothing but anger or frustration at the gravity of the situation.

I did get to go home yesterday for a few hours; however, thanks to Tray's screaming, I was more than ready to go back to the hospital; he about drove me crazy!  I don't know why he has to act out; just because he has special needs doesn't give him the right to act like a first.  Class. BRAT!!  I also had to get the mail, change my clothes, and take a short walk around the block.  It felt good to be able to stretch my legs and to update neighbors as to how my mom was doing.  They were sorry to hear that she wasn't doing any better; in fact, when I told them, I cried.  It was awful!

The one neighbor (Mrs. Teeters) told me that the guy who had hit mom was finally caught; however, she's afraid they'll let him out of jail before today is over if the lawyers representing him have their way; the kid (aged 17) keeps claiming his innocence, and so does his family.

Right.  And I'm the grand turnip of China.

Even a blind man can see that the kid was stone-drunk when he hit my mom; this isn't the first time he's done this.  Turns out the kid's been drinking steadily since he was my age; he's a repeat offender!!  He didn't have any regard for human life when he struck my mom; I still can't sleep because I still see mom's body flying at the impact and hear the thud of the car hitting her, then the thud of her body slamming onto the ground!

I also haven't been able to eat that good.  I've eaten, but I've been incredibly nauseated, and it's all I can do to keep from hurling everywhere!

And tomorrow is the Fourth of July.  Mom's favorite holiday.  And she won't be awake to enjoy it.  I'll probably spend it at the hospital with mami, praying for a miracle, that she wakes up in time to see the fireworks.  Mom loves fireworks; the thought of her missing them makes me ill!

So happy f***in' Independence Day, everyone!  (Everyone except us!  Ain't going to be very happy, spendin' it in a cold, sterile room full of machines, tubes, and whatnot, as my mom lies there, oblivious to what's going on around her!)

Why did that person have to hit my mom like that?  Why did my mom get the mail for elderly, frail Mrs. Copeland??  She was only trying to be nice; she didn't ask to be mowed over like a deer in the middle of the road!  I tell ya, life sure isn't fair at times!!

Now the person may go free to enjoy the fireworks while my mom doesn't know a godd*** thing!!  And there's no telling if she will be okay when she wakes up--that is, if she wakes up again!

Well, I have made myself cry again, so I will run.  Besides, the doctor is here; he wants to talk to me about mom.  I pray it is better news; right now I am so sick of bad news I can just spit nails!!  Just keep us in your thoughts as you go celebrate; remember that there will be some people who won't get that opportunity!  Thanks in advance!

~Julie J. Torres.  :(  >tears!<

I can relate... painful to read, but these things happen frequently. The man who killed one of my friends, and terribly wounded another was a repeat offender--was driving w/ a suspended license in a car loaned to him by his parents (who incidentally had purposefully removed him from their car insurance policy!). And our sweet mayor was so concerned about this kid and his family, that he publicly forgave his debt to society (no jail, no fine, no CONSEQUENCES) it just infuriates me. Where there are no consequences, there is no responsibility. What a sad thing to say for our society.

Good to be back and reading. Thanks for all of your sweet reviews. --Charlie

This story shows a young person's fear, anger and frustration with problems she can't "fix". It's a sad story, but unfortunately, one that too often folks have to experience. Good writing, Karen.

We had a buddy that was very bad head wounded and in coma. Every free pass their buddies got when to visit him to the hospital (a three hours chopper ride both ways) and will sit by his bed telling him all kind of things, even that they licked but good the enemy behind lines without anybody getting a scratch. They were told that he couldn't hear them.
But when he recovered consciousness he told us that he heard everything we ever said!
