Julie Torres is feeling more and more frustrated: her mother remains in a coma; there's no indication as to whether she will ever wake up again. She's also scared that she might end up losing her. (She and her mother are extremely close.)

July 7, 2009~

Julie Torres here.  Thought I'd update you on the status of my mother, Theresita, who remains in a coma here at Grace Memorial Hospital, where I've been camping out, keeping a bedside vigil.

I'm afraid things remain the same.  No change.  Very discouraging.  Doctors still don't hold out any hope that she will ever emerge from her coma; there's still no response to stimuli, and she remains unmoving, tubed, looking more dead than alive.

Mami's vital signs are relatively stable; that part's good, but I am getting scared now.  What if mami dies?  What's going to happen to us if this happens?  I don't think I could take over as caretaker for my younger brothers; I'm only thirteen years old, too young to be worrying about such responsibilities!

In addition to that (worrying about mami), I also worry about Tray, my youngest brother.  He has hypoplastic left heart syndrome (or something like that); he has had several heart surgeries and faces more in the years to come.  What if something happens to him during this time?  Having one sick person in the family is enough; now we have two.  A double whammy; it's getting to be much more than I can take right now!

Three days ago was the Fourth of July.  It was a nightmare!  I didn't even leave the hospital; I remained here, trying to while away the hours, while my family/friends celebrated our nation's birthday, went to the parade, and watched fireworks.  All I could do was cry!!

I am getting angrier and angrier at that damn kid who did this to my mother.  He had no business, none whatsoever, being on the road, drunk; now because of his stupid choices, my mom may never wake up again, and if she does, she will be permanently damaged!!

I know that as a Christian, I should forgive him, but I can't right now.  The wounds are too fresh, too raw, too real, and I just can't deal with it!

Well, I've turned on the waterworks yet again, so I am going to go now!  Please keep me (and my mom) in your prayers; we really could use some help from above!  Thanks in advance!

~Julie.  :(

Sadly all too often the results of the actions of drunk drivers are not witnessed by them but only by the victims families. I think besides loss of licence and heavy fines and jail terms they should also have to do emergency work in the hospitals...

Extremely sad, and there are far too many drunk drivers out there, who just don't seem to care.

Don't be angry, use the time to tell your mother that you love her and the things you two will do when she become well, tell her about all those thing that you two planed and never did, keep telling her...anger is a very negative force, she will be surrounded by a positive attitude.
