Nathan Lake updates us on what he has been up to.

July 8, 2009~

Nathn Lake here, the kid with the ugly mug.  I know I shouldn't be so hard on how I might appear to other people, but at times I can't help it, especially when they keep bringing it up.

Case in point:  the Fourth of July parade.  It was hard to enjoy the parade when little kids kept pointing at me or staring at me and also hearing them call me "Monster-Face" or "Ape-Boy".  It really made me feel uncomfortable; it wasn't long before I was close to tears.

I mean, can't I get through one day without people judging me or looking at me like I'm an alien?  I'm as human as they are (at times, even more so!), and I deserve to be treated with dignity and/or respoct!  Just because my face is weird looking, that doesn't mean that I'm a weird person!

It wasn't too bad when it got dark, before the fireworks; that way, people couldn't really see me, and besides, all their attention was focused skyward.  They had some awesome fireworks (or did, before the rains moved in); then the heavens opened, and you should have seen the people scrambling for cover!

Between the kids calling me names and the rain, my July 4th was uneventful:  there were a ton of people at the park, and they had some great music!  Cajun, country, rock, rap, jazz, fifties style, polka, gospel:  you name it, and they had it!  I especially liked the gospel and the Cajun acts; they were probably my favorites.

Family wise, we are doing good.  Ma and pa continue to take care of me, but I hate seeing them worry when I have to have another hospital stay or another surgery; it makes me feel like I'm the cause of their worries, and I hate feeling like that!

The weather here in Nashville has been rainy, but lately, it's been sunny, just very hot.  I'd rather have the rain; at least it keeps the temperatures down!  At least we don't have to worry so much about a drought, like they do in a good part of the country!

School is now out; I passed.  I will be in the tenth grade come September.  I can't wait; summer vacation is fun, don't get me wrong, but sometimes I get just plain bored!!  That's when my parental units have to throw me out of the house, to get some exercise, so I don't spend hours and hours on the computer and turn into a veg!  They hate it if I'm on the computer more than two hours!  Two hours is the max for my computer time!

I hate it because there's so many cool videos at YouTube!  I just love that site!

I also love www.authorsden.com.  That's a site for writers; maybe one day I'll get brave and post a story or a poem on there and see what others think.  I have been writing stories and poems since I was small; maybe I could have a book out one day, tell others about myself.

Well, I am going to go; been on the computer for the past hour adn a half, so I will run along and play some basketball.  I hear my friend Joey calling me from outside.  He wants me to join him.  Sounds like a good idea.  I will write in here again soon; until then, this is Nathan Lake saying I'm outta here!  So long and God bless!

~Nathan Lake.  :)

Sadly children are cruel and sadder still is that they learn this cruelty most times from their parents. The truth is that if he is deformed either natural or through an accident or disease he will probably be stared at and even ridiculed thoughout his life.

Love the piccy. =] Agree with Kate Burnside (below), we should not be judged by our appearances - it's what's underneath that counts. An excellent write, very well penned, Karen.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

... I'm obviously a bit behind with the journalling so far, but my heart is deeply touched by Nathan's harsh plight and his stoicism in dealing with it. It's such a sad fact that our face is the point of contact we have one with another in the first instance - and, if that don't fit for whatever reason - we know it from the very first second of eye contact. Yet even the most cursory peek beneath the skin shames our misconceptions. I do hope Nathan continues to write to make us aware just what it means to be labelled as "monstrous" because of the appearance of our facial features. As always, Karen, you push the emotional envelope and challenge us to have to consider what it means to be anything less than 100% mainstream. Bless you, Kate xx
