Excerpt from Kimberly Ware's "Heal My Wings: A Healing Guide from Women
After the divorce I had to learn how to be single. I did not date anyone for over a year and a half. During that time, I did some soul searching. I believe that I probably should have not dated for a little bit longer because I have made my share of mistakes while dating. Going out into the dating scene was hard after being with the same person for over ten years. Dating was totally different from when I was in college. Most of the men I went out with were expecting sex after the first date and some were even expecting a woman to take care of them. It seemed like men became sorrier and sorrier.
I am not sure if it was because I was a single black mother with two children if that was the reason why it seem like the pool of decent eligible men were so small. I do know that I was not being snooty. I’ve dated men with little or no money to men with plenty of money. The ones with no money were often looking to free load and the ones with money were often times very arrogant and conceited. I’ve even tried to date outside my race but I started to go out with a Japanese man and he thought that since I was a black single mother that I was just like those hoochie mamas on those rap videos that society depicts as African American women; unfortunately these negative images have been ingrained as the image for all black women.
And no I am not one of those sistas with attitudes. As a matter of fact I very calm and soft spoken person. My mother often times tells me that I am too submissive and timid. Not all black women have terrible attitudes and this is a horrible label for us because we are all individuals with our own personalities. Often times we are hurt and the camera is put in our faces when we are angry and tired of being mistreated and misunderstood. The movie by Tyler Perry “A Dairy of an Angry Black Woman” wraps it all in a nutshell. The camera does not show the hurt, the pain and abuse that we endured. I have to say that this can be for all women of all races that at one point in our lives we have been hurt and had to face many adversities in life.
I later started dating my husband Travis in 2006. I’ve known Travis since 4th grade and we grew up in the same neighborhood. My magazine Creative Minds Magazine is what brought us together. We both have a love for arts and entertainment. And we're both writers. When we start seeing each other it seemed like we connected and it was a match made in heaven.
