A young boy wants to be a gospel singer; he doens't let the fact that he is blind stop him from attempting to reach his dreams. He shares his story, in his own words.

My name is Trevor Wayne Cole.  I am ten years old.  I live in Nashville, Tennessee, with my family (mom, dad, two brothers, and three sisters).  I am the next to the youngest.

I will be in the fifth grade in a few weeks.  I can't wait; I love school; always have, always will.

I am blind.  I know that shouldn't matter, but I am.  I have been blind since shortly after being born.  I was given too much oxygen, and it damaged my eyes.  I can see a little, but very little more than light, which look more like shadows to me.  It's all I've ever known:  I never knew what colors looked like or to see the beauty around me; the only way I can know about things like the red leaves of autumn, the stars in the sky, or the big, black dog running around the water sprinkler is if people describe these images to me.

People might think that makes me unhappy.  It does to an extent.  On the other hand, I am glad I am blind:  that way, I don't see the ugly side of our world, like wars, children starving, or trash littering the streets.

Maybe it's a good thing I'm blind.  :)

I have a lot of interests.  I play baseball on a league for kids with special needs, I bowl, I ski, and I swim.  I love to sing, which is probably my first love.  Fact is, when I get older, I want to be a gospel singer.  I love gospel music; I have been singing since I was only four years old, and I enjoy singing for people.

I tried out for America's Got Talent.  Didn't make it though.  Maybe next year.  I was nervous, but gave it my best shot anyway.

I was disappointed; it would be stupid to say I wasn't.  One of my friends, Ronee' Reaux, tried out, and she made it to the quarter finals, but got disqualified when she didn't show up for her audition.  Maybe nerves got the best of her; or maybe she was sick.  I don't know; I will have to call her later, to see what happened.  (Ronee' is sixteen, with the voice of an angel.  She sings at our church quite often; she's really good at what she does!)

I did sing on July Fourth at our city's annual celebration, "Red,  White, and BOOM!"  It was fun hearing all those people clapping and cheering after each song I did.  It made me feel like a superstar!  :)  It was cool!  I really enjoyed myself!

Well, I have to run.  Mama's calling me.  Gotta get my dog and see what she wants (mama, not the dog!  LOL).  I will write in here again another day; until then, this is Trevor saying so long!  God bless you!

~Trevor Wayne Cole, aged 10, Nashville, Tennessee.

Karen,

Nice meeting Trevor Cole. =] I like the fact that he lives with his disability, does not let it live him. Well done!
