Young budding writer, Sunshine Lee, aged 13, writes in her journal while waiting to see the doctor for her annual checkup.

Thursday, July 30, 2009, Nashville, TN., Dr. Jack Emmons' office, 1:55 p.m., D.S.T.~

Dear Journal~

Sunshine Lee here.  Sorry if I haven't written; been very busy.  Between watching out over my littler brothers/sisters, doing my chores, playing with my family or friends, church, or performing/traveling, we just don't have a lot of free time, not nearly as much as I would like.  It's fun, but it's a pain, too!

I'm now thirteen.  Just turned thirteen a few weeks ago; I'm officially a teenager.  An adolescent.  A young adult.  Call it what you wish, but it all boils down to the same:  I'm no longer a little kid; it's time to put childish things behind me and look towards the future.  *sighhh*

I loved being a little kid.  When I was small, I didn't have any worries.  No boys calling me up for dates (too young, anyway; can't date for three more years.  Family rules!).  Worrying about body image.  Worrying about body odors or developing breasts/female organs.  Thinking about sex, what all that entails.  Thinking about what I might want to do for the rest of my life or whether to get married or forgo marriage, so I can go to college and choose a career.

Major, major worries for a thirteen-year-old teenager!  I'm not amused; I liked it a lot better when I was little!!

I'm currently sitting here with maman, sitting at Dr. Emmons' office.  Dr. Emmons, M.D., is my pediatrician; I've gone to him ever since I was small.  He's really good; thorough, but fun.  He makes you laugh, and if you have a good checkup or exam, he gives you a choice of stickers or an all day sucker.  He's cool!

I'm here to see the doctor for a general exam.  Guess he wants to make sure I don't have green teeth or horns growing out of the middle of my forehead or have bad breath or something, ,or to make sure my liver hasn't migrated to my brain!  LOLOLOLOL

Don't really have to worry because I'm as healthy as a horse.  Always have been, which is a lot more than I can say about some of my more disabled brothers and sisters who see doctors every month or every few weeks (or so it seems)!

We are going to go to Louisiana in a few weeks.  Vacation.  Going for a weekend; we're going to a Cajun music festival.  We've been there before, several times, and it's gobs of fun; I really love it!!

Don't know what else we have planned other than our usual (crazy) lives, so there you go.  We may have a show or two or sing at church, but other than that, I don't see very many performing gigs for us.

Well, the nurse (Annie) has just called me to go back to wait, so I will go for now. I will write in here again soon; until then, this is Sunshine Lee saying so long!  God bless!

~Love, your friend in Tennessee, Sunshine Lee Twan Nicole, age 13 years old now!  (I am a TEENAGER!!  Woo-WHOO!!) :D

Wait 'til you get to be 50, Sunshine Lee. Talk about wanting to go back to childhood (but ONLY if you knew then what you know now LOL) ... an excellent, contemplative write. Well done, Karen.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
