A scientist takes flight in a craft he built and reaches the heights he never targeted.

Dr Kurmanchala Khare, known to his friends as KK, had spent 20 years of his adult life developing a device for self levitation. He had examined all the scientific devices used - diamagnetism, antigravity material, tractor beams ( used in star trek) etc, that were capable of producing a few feet of flight in a room and were used as party tricks. His interest overlapped disciplines like magic, spritualism, yoga etc. He was a firm believer in scientific facts and had little patience for the so called psychic. Over the years he had assiduously maintained his cynicism for such non scientific claims.

His research had recently borne fruit. He had been able to develop a miniaturised gyroscope that was capable of vertical flights using reverse Casmir force ( this is neither a electrical charge nor gravity but the fluctuations in all-pervasive energy fields in the intervening empty space between the objects and is one reason that atoms stick together - a“dry glue” effect that enables a gecko to walk across a ceiling). Using a special lens KK, was successful in achieving Casimir force to repel, rather than attact. The device had undergone a pilot trial and had been calculated to reach the hieght of 500 m in less than 5 minutes. It had many intricacies which were jealously guarded by KK ….this had the potential to make him a billionairre many times over besides getting him a place in history.

KK was seeking funds for developing a prototype but the management of the government lab he worked in was not convinced. Consequent to protracted discussions and many scientific presentations he was asked to demonstrate his test device to the Minister.

A date and venue (the open parking in his lab) was fixed. Stringent security was arranged, more for the sake of Minister rather than the nature of the experiment. KK was all het up for the occasion….he checked and rechecked his device for any type of short coming. He thought of smuggling the device and making a trial run but decided against it …….too dicey with all the security.

On the actual day he reached the venue much earlier to check out the arrangements. The dignitaries and his peers were to be about 250 m from the flight point……… for safety. They did not believe him but were averse to risk from his fool hardiness. No body was there to help him. He was supposed to carry his own device and paraphernalia. He had been adviced to use a helmet and other safety-devices used by para jumpers ……less for his concern and more to avoid the ensuing medical bills felt KK. He opened the small briefcase and set up his device – it looked like a bathroom scale with an extended rod having a flattish synthetic lense on top and a small console supported by another shorter rod. There was a halter to keep him on the scales just under the lens.

His attention was diverted by a commotion in the ground. The Minister had arrived. Soon he was given the signal to initiate his experiment……..no words were required as every thing had been explained to all those present, amply. He stepped on the scale adjusted the halter and started working on the console ……then he pressed a switch……there was an apprehensive silence in the ground. All eyes were riveted on him ……..then a slow whistling sound emerged and he was seen to be leaving the ground at snails pace. Slowly KK accelerated and with a shrill swissssssssssssssssh he was hovering above the ground roughly 300m above the ground…….. and as the Minister watched he disappeared from sight.

***************************************************

KK fiddled with the different switches on his console ……….he knew something was wrong ……the device was programmed for only 500 m of flight and he was at least a KM in the sky and still rising.

He noticed an ethereal form close to him……before he could even be surprised ……the form spoke - Dr Khare I am here to look after you!!
KK - whhhhoo are you .. eh a paratrooper
EF - No!
KK – Alien life form?
EF – No! I AM GOD the SUPREME BEING!!
KK – Ridiculous and what are you doing here.
EF – I have ensured that your experiment is a success!!
KK- Oh ! So you acceded to my wife and son’s request !! ( his wife had put a teeka on his forehead for victory in the morning and his son had fervently wished all success for him so he could buy a bunglow and a T-20 team to get in to page 3)
EF- YES - and now do agree that I am all GOOD and all POWERFULL!!
KK- I do not. I would have to examine this whole contraption scientifically to pin point the aberration.
EF- Well! You must do what you have to….!!
and the GOD vanished leaving KK to fiddle with his console. It seemed to be in perfect order and KK pushed a few buttons and started his descent to the ground.

He was hailed as a hero and his experiment was considered a success.

******************************************************

The EF that called itself GOD was sitting in a orchard of undescribable fruits with a thin dark man in black clothes.  The clothes and his form seemed to absorb all light. The dark one called itself the DEVIL.

D – why do you waste your time with these humans ……..you have just witnessed their foolhardiness……na
EF – No, Its your conformity that I find detestable!! I love their spirit of enquiry and their tenacity at refusing what they do not understand!!
Do not forget that we both exist because of them!!
