My son, Aeden Michael, is a miracle in every sense of the word.
We adopted him three years ago, when he was just a few months old. He's now three and has grown into a beautiful little boy. We knew he needed a family to call his own; nobody else seemed to take interest; we wanted to let him know we cared.
Aeden is a child with special needs. He is blind and has cerebral palsy. He isn't mentally disabled; however, his physical disabilities make it hard for him to communicate or get around effectively. It is a challenge, but we welcomed this child with joy.
Aeden was adopted from Seoul, South Korea. He was abandoned by mother when it was discovered that her only child was born handicapped. He was immediately taken to an orphanage; at one year of age, he was diagnosed with vision impairments and CP.
We had wanted a child from overseas for a very long time. We had neighbors who adopted some children from Korea and Vietnam; we fell in love with them; we decided that we would adopt as well.
We would not only adopt a child: we'd adopt a child nobody else wanted. I had worked with handicapped children; they were beautiful; I wanted nothing more than to give one of these children a chance to succeed in life.
After much prayer/discussion, we decided that we would take this route. We did. After all the home studies, mounds of paperwork, extensive background checks, etc., we were cleared to be able to adopt; we then proceeded to look for a needy child we could give our home/hearts to.
Enter tiny Young Woon Ji.
He soon became a part of our lives; even though he wasn't with us at first, we still fell in love with him. We looked at the picture the adoption agency had sent us; we talked to him (and prayed for him) every night.
We couldn't wait for him to join us in America. We counted the days; oh, how we wanted this child!!
The day he came was the happiest day of our lives. He came on a big airplane; family and friends came to meet him, welcome him to his new life. I am sure the noise was overwhelming for the frightened boy; we didn't care; all we cared about was that he was finally home, where he belonged.
We still remember that day like it was only yesterday, even though it was three years ago. Our boy is now permanently ours; he's grown into a sweet-natured, loving child who knows how to wrap our hearts around his little bitty fingers.
Aeden has made some progress in his therapies; he will probably always need some degree of help; however, he is still able to learn. He is smarter than appearances show; if people can look past the spastic limbs, uncontrollable drooling, wheelchair, and sightless eyes, they would see a gorgeous three-year-old boy who has become the light of our lives.
We still don't know if Aeden will be able to walk on his own; yet we remain hopeful. And we thank God every day for this child. We couldn't have been more blessed; we feel that we were meant to have this special little boy.
Every day with him is definitely a miracle!
