A boy recovering from pneumonia shares his thoughts.

Weak.  Rundown.  Feel more like a washed out dishrag, especially when I have to cough for what seems like the umpteenth time.

Yeah, that's me right now.  Just got out of the hospital yesterday; was in a week with pneumonia.  Over the worst of it now, but it will be a little while before I feel like myself again.

At least the pokings, proddings, and stabbings are overwith, as are the daily "interruptions" by nurses, who want to check my vital signs!  Whoever said you get rest in a hospital has obviously never been a patient!!

I still feel like I'm in the hospital though:  I have oxygen prongs stuck up my nose; doctor wants me to be on oxygen a little longer; he says I'm not breathing deep enough.  If that isn't bad enough, I have to do "breathing treatments" by blowing in a spirometer thingamajig up to ten times every two hours; it encourages me to breathe in deeper, and it makes me cough; if there's one thing I don't want to do it's cough because it makes my chest hurt worse!!

I'm not ready to go back to school just yet; maybe next week or the week after.  In the meantime, I am to remain in bed and make sure I drink enough liquids, eat enough food, and take my prescribed medications (pills) to knock the pneumonia outta my system.  I am to get as much rest as possible and forget about going inside, or else I could have a relapse and end up back in the hospital again.

In other words, I'm flat out grounded with a capital G.

A nurse does come by once a day to check my vital signs and make sure I'm following Dr. Pratt's orders, which I am, no problemo.  That's a pain in the ass.  She's okay, but she has a face that looks like a female variant of Godzilla: she's butt-ugly!  *gad!*

I'm just glad I have some new movies and games to play, as well as some new comix to read.  That way, I'm not just lying there like a dead fish or twiddling my thumbs!  Thank God for Christmas; I  have some new things to keep me entertained while I recover from my stupid pneumonia!

Well, nursie is here to check me, so I'd best go.  I will write in here again probably in a few days if I'm feeling somewhat better; until then, I'm going to sleep so I can get over my illness faster!  Take care and so long for now!

~Sidney Yance, aged 16.  :)

This brings back a lot of memories. I was the runt of a liter of nine children and from the time I was four up to about ten I was prone to pneumonia and plueracy as well. I spent weeks on end in bed and back then the only entertainment we had was books if someone went to the library for me. It did have it's bright points though for I became very close to my Mom who would make me home made french fries or other treats when the other kids were at school.
