Trinh Michael Madison, aged nine, has become a big brother.

Amy Madison here with another update about my family.

Trinh Michael, my nine-year-old son, is doing very well, especially now that he has become a big brother.  I have adopted another boy, this time from Africa; his name is Kweme, and he is six years old.  He also has cerebral palsy:  he is learning to walk on a wheeled walker; doctors are hopeful that one day he will graduate to crutches.

Kweme came last month, and it's been hectic at best.  Trinh is loving his new little brother, although, at present, Kweme doesn't speak much in the way of English.  We have our neighbor, Margaret Ondiwe, who is from Kenya, come over to help translate; right now Kweme speaks mainly Swahili.

Only Swahili words I know are "hukana matata" ("no worries"), "rafiki" (friend), "simba" (lion), and "twiga" (giraffe).  Oh, and "Jambo" (hello).  That's it.  LOL

Guess you can say I learned that from watching "The Lion King" too many times.  Trinh absolutely loves that movie!

People have been kind since I brought Kweme home.  They bring us gifts for Kweme (and for Trinh), give us cards with money or gift cards (I tell them this isn't necessary), and bring us food.  They come over to meet the new family member; I think Kweme is overwhelmed by this because he usually ends up hiding or crying (sometimes both); he is still not sure about his new life here in America:  everything is still too new or strange for him.

I will have to learn to be patient with Kweme, and also with Trinh, when he demands extra attention from me.  LOL  Never knew two boys could be such work!!  LOLOLOL  Now I am truly a mother, now twice over!

Trinh has taken up a new interest:  bowling.  He absolutely loves it!  He bowls every week on a junior bowling league, and he has really improved.  I am very proud of him, especially when he knocks all of the pins down.  We go bowling on Saturday mornings.

Kweme comes with us, but he spends his time looking at all of the games or hiding when people acknowledge him; then I have to find him.  LOL  (He's usually found hiding underneath a chair or behind the ball return thingamajig.)

It seems funny that Trinh was so scared when I first got him; now he's a typical nine-year-old boy who is as smart as a whip.  I am very proud of how far he's come since I first heard about him and he entered my world.  Hopefully Kweme will do the same; I just pray and hope with all my heart that he wasn't abused either.

Well, it's time to get sleepy little boys out of bed for school, so I will go for now.  I will write in here again soon; until later, this is Amy Madison saying so long and God bless!

~Amy.  :)

Sounds like an unbelievably wonderful woman with a heart as big as big. Amazing how kids can acclimate and I have no doubt that the next time we hear of this family Kweme will be on the way to becoming "Americanized."

Great. Africa was just a spot on the map to me until my daughter and grand daughter went to Uganda this past summer to work with kids. They loved them.
