...to make some people`s day just a little bit happier, that`s what`s all about...

I was damn broke. I wake up that morning knowing that i was damn broke. I wonder how many college students ever woke up with the same problem and how often. I tried getting a job last summer but things didn`t go as i imagined. It`s not like in the movies you know, or maybe in my country is not like in the movies, because in my country you work your ass all day dawn till dask, you get head -pounded everyday by a nitwit who just happens to have a little bit more power than you and who thinks that gives him control over your life, and then when you get your paycheck you see half of it going on your rent and the other half on bills. I might be over reacting, but the truth is that getting a job at this point really seemed to have more downs than ups.

But, that`s not so important to this story. What is important is the feeling of worthlessness i had that moment when i felt the wind blowing through my pockets. Because if you don`t have money you can`t really do much, can you? You can just say ``Neah, fuck it ! `` and go have a beer with your pals and forget about it because...well you can`t afford a beer , and your buddies might not be so eager to meet you at the local pub when they know drinks are on their tab. You can`t smoke a cigg, and relax if you can`t afford a package of ciggarettes. You might go for a walk in the park, but i must say that in this particular case it was the middle of january.

So i didn`t have anything to do in that particular day of january and i was bored out of my mind. I tried studying but that only bored me further. Luckily i still had a few cigarettes left in my package so i opened the window and lighted one.

As i sat in my room with my head out the window and smoking i looked at the people below me. It was a fryday morning-well ,morning, lets say for me it was morning because i just woke up but in fact it was 1 in the afternoon. It was an ugly depressing january-like weather outside.

You know that january feeling? When all holidays had passed, and you have to go back to work ,or to school. And offcourse the snow its melting, turning into mud sprinkled with pieces of past Christmas and New Year`s decorations. Coldness and mud- that`s january , the most depressing month in the year, and goddamit is the first month of the year.  They should have put New Year in february or march, i mean really, you just step into the new year and what is the first thing that greets you? Mud, coldness and mud, and work. You can`t really make high hopes about the rest of the year, now can you?

Neither could the people i was watching from my dirty window. Then i wondered how many people were broke like me. I knew a lot of students had that problem on a regular basis, but how about these guys? They must be going through rough times by the look on their faces. At least im a student, for al it matters im not working, so i couldn`t really rightfully complain about the lack of means, but these were normal, working citizens who shared the same misery, only that they toiled for that misery.  It gave me another reason to hate work. So what, if i work i end up to be still poor, only i have less spare time? That puts you down, especially when you see that the guys who you work for seem to draw all life sweetness out of your work.

I still felt pity for the poor gloomy faces in the street . But on the otherside, i had my own problems. What would cheer me up? As childlish as it sounds i was craving for a bottle of coke and a hamburger. I checked my fridge: a piece of cheese, an almost empty bottle of ketchup, and some chicken meat that probably went bad. Shit! And i was out of ciggarettes to. It is my custom when i don`t know what to eat to smoke another ciggarette.

It wasn`t that bad , i still had some food and in a few days i would go home to my parents house and get some money and food like the spoiled brat i was. Nevertheless i still craved for that coke and burger and searched for some forgetten money. In vain. My roommate was out so i couldn`t borrow some from him. I must say at that moment i realised what happiness meant. For me at particular moment happiness didn`t meant green pastures or clear sunny beaches. I didn`t need a milion dolars, i just needed 5 five bucks , that would have made me happy ,that would have meant heaven for me there and then.

I didn`t get that wish, but what if i could give it to other people. What if i had money, lots of money. What if i had 10 000 dolars to do everything i wanted with them. How would i use that sum to make someone happy?

Would i donate it to an orphanage or something? Fuck that, there are a lot of bilionaires donating regulary money to orphaneges, and how about the beggars you see in the street? I swear that no matter how much money people would throw on them they still come back and ask for more. They don`t seek help, its full time job for them, they don`t even consider changing their life- their doing nothing and earning lots of money, what`s to change?

But who ever helps those normal average everyday working honest people? They work 8 hours a day 6 days a week, but still they can barely support themselves and their families- now, that`s a tragedy.

But what if i could help them? What if i could give some money to each of them, not much, since i i couldn`t possibly imagine having such a financial situation that i could afford changing every man`s life, but what if i could give each man a little . How much would i have to give to brighten one`s day- not much. Imagine you wake up one morning and find 5 bucks in your mailbox, or 10 bucks, that wouldn`t change your life but it would sure light up your day. Maybe you were broke like me and needed that money to buy a package of cigarrettes or to go drink a beer. Or maybe you don`t have anything to eat today , or maybe you have a debt that you must pay immediately.

A small amount of money dropped from the sky and with the prospect that maybe tomorrow you will get lucky again is like a breath of fresh air, like a lolipop to a kid who just came from the doctor.

How much money would i need? Not much. Lets say i would to give 5 bucks. With 50 bucks i could bright up the day of 10 people. With 500 bucks i could bright up the day of 100 people. What about if i had 10.000 dolars?

I would go every morning and place and envelope with 5 dolars in every man`s mailbox, and make his day a little more lucky, a little more cheerful, a little bit more magical. Because when you get kindness from a total stranger who doesn`t expect nothing back, that is magic.

And why would I do that? Because I want a coke and a hamburger, and since i can`t get it , maybe , learning from my experience i could fullfill someone else`s desire for a coke and hamburger , in the future.

    Wouldn`t that be nice?
