Here Halloween had come up on us again and Max and me did not have anything to do. Things had been pretty quiet for us lately, I mean we had not done anything exciting or been in trouble for at least ….a day. So for something to do we decided to visit the graves on the neighbors place.
The graves had been there a long time. I don’t know who was buried there, probable chief Winnemucca or George Washington or somebody like that. Anyway we decided the thing to do was to visit them after dark. When the ghosts would be out of bed and roaming around looking for kids. Not that we believed in them, but you can’t be too sure about those things.
We talked about it all day and made plans for the visit, not knowing that Max’s sister, the Gargoyle, was listening.
As it got dark we left the house. The graves were about a half mile away. As we got closer we walked closer together. Soon we were holding on to each other, barely moving our feet. Our eyes were looking every direction at once. Our ears were rotating like radar, picking up every sound in the world.
Suddenly I tripped over something. “They got me” I yelled at Max.
Max was no help. He was already running as fast as he could the opposite direction. But he was not going anyplace fast. I was holding on to his leg as tight as I could. My face was covered with dirt from the way he was tearing up the ground trying to get away. I figured if they were going to get me they were going to get Max too.
Eventually I got up enough courage to try and see what had a hold of me. To my relief, I discovered it was only some baling wire which I managed to get Max to stop running in place long enough to look at.
After I got untangled, we continued on our way.
Whish……….whish………whish……….
“Do you hear something?” I whispered.
“Yea”.
Whish………………whish……………..whish…………..
We stopped.
It stopped.
“They’re after us” I said, my voice rising in panic.
“I know”.
We started.
It started.
Whish………….whish…………whish…………
We walked faster.
“What are we going to do?”
“I don’t know” Max replied, his voice shaky.
We were to the pint of panic, when Max said in a moment of inspiration, but with terror echoing in his voice, “lets ignore them and maybe they will go away”. We continued but it wasn’t easy. The sound stayed with us.
Of course the fact that I was wearing a brand new pair of blue jeans never dawned on us. You remember those blue jeans of old? Brand new they could stand up against a wall by themselves. Of course washing them before wearing them was unheard of, you got new pants you had to wear them.
Up ahead in the moonlight we could see the white grave stones. We were almost there. Just as we got about ten feet from the graves, something white stood up from behind the grave stones, laughing hideously.
We were gone.
Max took the lead and I grabbed his shirt tail and was being pulled along behind, whipping like the tail of a kite, my feet hitting the ground about every ten steps.
We hit the county road really moving, I mean we were moving. We crossed the old wooden bridge sounding like a herd of stampeding cows.
Behind us, echoing through the night air, we could hear the sinister laughter of whatever was after us. We practically tore the door off trying to get into the house. Only after we got into house and our sanity, what little we had, returned did we realize that the ghost was Max’s sister, the Gargoyle, who is perfectly at home in any graveyard. She was right behind us holding her sides from laughing so hard.
We swore revenge. But later, for now we would just stay in the house. After all it was still Halloween.
