Hello from Nunuvut, in Northern Canada! It is me, your little Inuk friend, Auuniq Titaquaalaq!
I am doing okay; the kids at my school are still giving me a hard time about my being a Native person. I don't see anything bad about being an Inuk: it's who I am, and it's all I know! Besides, I don't make fun of them; why, then, must they make fun of me?? It's not fair!!
I keep beggging Mother and Father to teach me at home; they both say nothing doing, because they are too busy themselves. It really makes me sad because some kids are very mean to me, and I don't like it at all!!
I wish my brothers Peetaq, Quallaaq, or Aqsamirq could go to my school and show the bad kids a thing or two -- withi their fists! That'd teach 'em not to pick on little brothers or Native kids! The teachers don't seem to do anything about it; it's getting to be really bad!
The only times I am truly happy is when I am helping Father with the traps, his hunting, or other chores. I don't mind helping Mother, but she has me help with her sewing, and that is girl's work; I am a boy! I want to play or do boy things, not sew like a girlie-girl!
When I am not helping Father or Mother, I love to play with my friends Timmy Quiqsuq, Toby Evans, Uumaaquaaluqsuk Charlie, or Randy Tutaniq; we play stick ball, ice bowling, baseball, or football together, or we play video games when I go to their houses. That doesn't really happen all that much because I'm usually stuck helping my parents, which can be a big drag!
I also love to watch the northern lights (the night rainbow) in our skies when the skies are clear and/or full of stars. I like to think the lights as putting on a show just for me, with their dancing curtains of colour, and I like to think it's my ancestors paying me a visit. Whenever I see the northern lights blazing in our skies, I am very happy; I always feel good whenever I see them.
Well, I am writing this in my reading class; if Mme. Roubedeaux sees me writing in my journal instead of working on my SSR (Silent Sustained Reading), she might just whack my hand with the ruler. I don't want that, so I'd best get back to my books, plus she's making a mad face at me. That tells me she means business. I will write in here again soon; until later, this is Auuniq Titaquaalaq saying au revoir!
