My son is the sweetest little boy.  He makes me smile with every fiber of his being.  Yesterday was a good example of this.

He was walking to school with his older sister, just as he always does, when he happened to spot a baby robin sitting in the middle of the sidewalk.  He looked up at his big sister, blue eyes open wide, and asked, "What should we do?"

Big sister looked down at little Wylie and replied, "Nothing.  Just leave him be; his mamma will find him soon enough".

Wylie then piped up and responded with "But what if a mean old cat or a big dog gobbles him up? Then what is his mamma going to do then?  I don't want our little birdie to get eaten up!"

Gennifer couldn't agree more with him.  They both knew that they had to help get the little robin out of harm's way.  They carefully found a leaf that was big enough, gently set the baby bird upon it, and moved it off the sidewalk, into a safe place by the bottom of the tree.  It was apparant that he had tried to fly and fell out of his nest.  Surprisingly, the baby bird wasn't hurt, but he was, nevertheless, very, very scared.

He was so scared he couldn't move.  He just sat there like a little stone, his beady black eyes open in terror, as he surveyed the world around him.  He was probably scared of the two human children most of all; I am sure they appeared like giants to him.

For over a half hour, boy and girl stood looking down at the baby robin.  They didn't want anything to happen to it.  They both knew they would be late for school because of it, but both children felt it was worth it to try to help the bird in the best way they knew how.

Wylie and Gennifer then set off for school.  When the teacher asked them why they were late, little Wylie piped up with, "A robin held us up!"  Gennifer then went on to explain what had happened.  Only then did the teacher's mad glare soften into a look of compassion and love for the two late schoolchildren; she understood completely why they had a perfectly good excuse for being tardy.

The teacher was so touched by the children's story that she called me to tell me about it.  I couldn't help but smile; my chidlren have always held a soft spot for their furry and feathered friends.  I knew that they would both help an animal in need.  They learned this from their aunt, who is a veterinarian.

I am sure that little Wylie and his big sister, Gennifer, will earn extra jewels on their crowns when they get to Heaven for the love they showed towards this helpless baby robin who'd fallen out of his nest.
