It doesn't look like Sukie, my Irish Setter, is going to get any better. If anything, according to Dr. Sampson, our veterinarian, Sukie appears to be doing worse.
She got into some rat poison yesterday and got extremely sick. We rushed her to the vet's office, in the hopes that he could help, but she's not doing good. Seems that the poison has severely damaged her brain; she is having seizures, and her vital signs are out of whack. Dr. S. says that the only thing that can be done is to put her to sleep because she isn't going to get any better.
Ma just talked to him on the phone; we have all been crying ever since. We may have to go to the office, so we can say our goodbyes.
I remember the day when we got Sukie three years ago. She was a fat sausage of a puppy, with a lively, go-get-'em type of personality; she loved people, and people, they loved her right back. She was a brilliant red color, with long, luxurious, thick fur, and had the prettiest dark eyes. Seems that she was always smiling; the only times she wasn't was when she was sleeping or eating.
Now Sukie lies in the veterinarian's office, fighting for every ounce of her being. We don't know if she is going to make it or not, but she must have gotten into a goodly amount of the poison; otherwise, she'd be doing a lot better than she is right at the present time. I am getting scared; I don't know what to do ...
I'd hate to lose my buddy; she slept with me, and she stuck by my side every minute! She was my best friend!
This is always one of life's most unbearable times: the putting of a beloved member of the family to sleep. I've gone through this more times than I care to remember. So sad, but I've found, though there will always be the remembrance of each of our dear friends, I've found that getting a new friend always helps blunt the sadness.
