A family learns to stay together during a power outage.

Image of approaching cold front (C) 2010, by Karla Dorman.

Guess God must have a sense of humor ...

Figured He got tired of all the bickering that was going on, so He decided to do something about it.

Am typing this via batteries.  Otherwise, I'd be using my regular desktop computer.  I'm sitting on the couch (along with the family) as I do this. I'm also wrapped up in a blanket, along with my husband, Michael, and our three teenaged children: sixteen-year-old Silas, fourteen-year-old Brandon, and thirteen-year-old Kayleigh.

We have decided to make our couch our permanent home.  The power has been out since 11 o'clock last night.  A storm had blown through; lightning (coupled with the winds) blew out the power; we've been in "the dark" ever since.

Before the power blew, Michael and I were listening to yet another argument session between our three kids.  Silas was blaming Brandon for swiping his favorite brand of deodorant, and Kayleigh was blaming her two older brothers for the fake spider they'd put into the shower, scaring her halfway to death.

Kayleigh, Brandon, and Silas have really never been able to get along.  Lord knows, they've tried, but to Mike's and my dismay, they haven't, no, not really.  We have heard the same tired arguments time and time again; it's getting to the point to where both Michael and myself want to bump their heads together!!

Hard to believe how chilly the house has gotten.  It feels more like Alaska than Alabama, where we live!  I expect to see some icebergs or some icicles forming, or at least see a polar bear or two (along with a smiling pair of Inuit hunters)!  It's no wonder all of us are cocooned in a mound of blankets!

Poor Kayleigh has no meat on her bones: she is pitifully skinny.  Always has been.  She is built like me: I am skin and bones too.  I have taken after mom's side of the family.  No fatties on her side at all.  As for Mike ...  but then, that's another story.  LOL

While I type, Silas and Brandon are reading the Bible by firelight; as for Kayleigh, she is staring blankly at the roaring fire in our fireplace (probably wishing that she could call her girlfriend, Jessica, or wishing that she was on Facebook, no doubt).  Mike is praying softly, asking God to please restore the power, so the house can warm up.  I'm wishing the same thing as my husband is.  It is so cold in here!!

Well, I am going to try to get some sleep; am off work today anyway, so I might as well take advantage of it while the opportunity arises (plus my laptop is warning me that my batteries are low).  Hopefully before too long the power will come back (or at least while I slumber away; am about to tell the family to go to bed as well; none of us have really gotten any sleep).  So on that note, goodnight, y'all!

We lost power for a couple of days after the January 1994 Northridge earthquake. I can relate a bit. No fun but not really that cold. Just real dark at night. Had an outdoor propane grill so lots of burgers an hotdogs.Patrick

Power outages are beasts to get through especially when you live in the mid west and it is an ice storm that knocks out the power...wow, hope this winter is kinder. Great write, Karen
