I would like to discuss my true story about an interracial romance in the 1970's.  I fell in love with a white man named David during my senior year in high school.  He was several years older than me and I met him while babysitting for his family.  However, it was the early 1970's and interracial romances between blacks and whites were still taboo.  Also, there were many movements going on at the time such as the Civil Rights Movement and the Women Rights Movement.  I was very active in these movements at school and later in college. 
 
Although David's family wasn't prejudice, the thought of me being involved with a white man seemed so hopeless to me at the time.  Also, I grew up in an environment filled with domestic violence, which complicated the matter even more.  So I left home to attend college, on academic scholarship, and ended the relationship without a word to David or his family.  David's family wanted me to move with them to Oceanside and to pay for my college education. 
 
Within the same year of me leaving, David died in an accident.  I never had a chance to explain why I did what I did to David or his family.  And yes, I still love him to this day.  The lesson I learned is when God sends you what you need in life, you should never let prejudices get in the way of that gift.  I wrote about my experiences in a book called Checkered Fences.
