     A woman shares her story.

Name's Lottie.  Lottie Ann Perkins.  I am a friend of Bernice Webster.  I live here at the nursing home, but I'm okay with that.  Don't get around nearly as well as I once did (happens when you get old), and my husband, my soulmate, died several years back: didn't have anyone, so I came here.

Didn't like it at first, but it's okay now.  I've gotten used to it.  I have made a lot of wonderful friends, including Bernice, who is in here recovering from a very nasty bacterial infection.  She was in the hospital until just a few weeks ago, and she is very weak.  She's doing a little better, but it's all the staff can do to try to get her to eat.  Poor little thing just doesn't have any appetite ...

I live here in Nashville, Tennessee, but beforehand, I lived in Findlay, Ohio.  I like Tennessee; been here a time or two on vacation with Chicken (my husband; his real name was William), and the last time we'd come here, I decided that I wouldn't mind living here.  So we moved.  Had ten good years together here before Chicken's health took a nosedive south, and then he died.

That was five years ago.  I still miss him so much!

Chicken and I tried to have children, but nothing doing.  It just wasn't in the cards.  We tried to adopt, but we ended up giving up because it is such a long, drawn out process, plus Chicken got impatient with the whole deal, so we relented.  So, as a result: no children.

I sometimes wish we could have had a family, but God had other plans.  Whereupon, I busied myself with my career (worked at a bank for over 20 years before Chick got sick), and later on, with taking care of my husband.

Thank God for church!  If it were not for church (or my relationship with Jesus Christ), I would have probably ended up in the looney bin long ago!  It especially helped having church friends when Chicken got sick and then died.  They saw to it that I had everything I could have possibly needed, but then my own health faltered, and now I'm here in the nursing home.

It's not bad.  I have many friends here, and the staff treats us real good.  Every Tuesday I get my hair done, and every day there is always something to look forward to.  Bingo Monday.  Craft Tuesday.  Dance Wednesday (though I don't dance; have arthritis real bad; use a wheelchair or an electric scooter).  Health/Nutrition Thursday (we get our blood sugar, blood pressure, etc., checked, to make sure we're hummin' along).  Music Friday.  Saturdays are reserved for field trips (we go to all the local hangouts or hot spots for the day and just enjoy ourselves).  And on Sunday, a van takes those who are able to get out to church (we go to Christ Community Assembly of God, but a few others go to their own respective churches; it's just that CCAofG church is a lot closer to the home, so a lot of us choose to go there).

I think my favorite day of the week is Sunday.  I also love Fridays and Saturdays, but all the days are good, really.

Well, I'm up too early, so I am gonna lie back down and sleep until it's time for breakfast (that's usually at nine).  I will write in here again another day; until later, this is Lottie Perkins saying so long! God bless!

~Lottie.
