It was Mitch Lucas’s team vs. Buster Crooks’ team. Buster had the exclusive distinction of being the fastest kid in school. He was a fifth grader same as Mitch and Ray but could whip any sixth grader easy. And he was the best catcher at school other than Mitch. What set Buster apart from every other player, including Mitch, was his dodging ability; as graceful on the field as any kid in school and almost impossible to hit with the ball.

He didn’t like Mitch much, in fact, he didn’t like anyone that much. He always walked around with a big grin as if to say, “I’m the fastest kid in school and I’ll prove it anytime, anywhere.” Mitch and Ray knew this would be their toughest game ever. Ray told Mitch he was gonna try to get him out early and end it. Buster scared Mitch ‘cause when they would race he would look over at Mitch halfway through and smile, then hit the rocket thrusters and leave him in the dust. Buster had the superpower every kid wanted, blazing speed!
