A woman is shocked to see two small children walking by themselves next to a busy highway.

They couln't have been more than four years old at the most.

There were two of them, obviously related.  A small girl and her younger brother.  They were walking right beside the highway, holding hands, walking to only God knows where.  Their steps had a sense of purpose.  The girl was dressed in a long, white nightie; her brother, meanwhile, was naked, save for the diaper he was wearing.

I couldn't believe my eyes.  What were these children doing out without their parents?  Didn't their parents even realize that the children were gone?  And if so, why weren't they even looking for them or having others do the same?

I grew increasingly concerned, so I drove up next to them and tried to be friendly as I asked them where their mommy and daddy were.  The little girl regarded me with dark, serious eyes.  Both children were extremely filthy and in sore need of a bath.  I noticed the boy was barefoot while the girl had plastic purple shoes on her feet.  The girl was holding a ratty looking teddybear in one arm.

The girl answered, but in Spanish.  I did not speak Spanish, so I had no clue as to what she told me.  I knew I had to get help; I flagged down a police car, and the cop came to where I and the children were standing.  I explained the situation to him.  I told him the children didn't speak English, and I didn't speak Spanish, so I was in desperate need of help.

The policeman spoke to the children in Spanish.  The children were still rooted to the same spot; they didn't move.  The boy was, by now, crying.  The policeman thanked me for calling him about this situation.  He then waved me on my way; he'd take over, he told me.

As I drove away from the scene, I started praying for the children.  I prayed that they would be reuinted with their family and that they would remain safe.  I noted that both children, besides being very dirty, were also covered in a sea of bug bites (mosquitos or flies, perhaps, maybe even fleas?).  They looked like they had missed several meals.  It was obvious that the parents just didn't care or they had been abandoned, but I really had no clue as to what was going on in their lives.

I had just seen the pair walking, with no adult supervision, so I had to act accordingly before one (or both) of them got hurt (or even worse).

I will continue to pray for the children and hope that this matter will be dealt with as quickly as possible.  Little children should not be left alone, even for a second; there's no telling what could happen to them!  Something like this could lead to very tragic consequences!

Good story! I'm glad you stopped to help, many would have just driven by, not stopping to help. One has to wonder if the family is poor or just neglectful? You got my attention with this one, well done! Joy L. Hale

I will be watching for the 'continued' part of this story. How fortunate that the children's guardian angel stopped to offer help!
