An older man complains about the heat, especially since his air conditioning dies, forcing him to seek refuge somewhere else.

Conarn it all! Seems that I can never get enough relief from the heat for long before something else happens!
I'm currently taking refuge at the local senior center. Looks like I'll be here all day. Darn air conditioning at my house went out yesterday afternoon; it wasn't long before my house felt like a sauna inside! I knew I wouldn't last long there, so I slept at my next door neighbor's house, then when I got up and had my breakfast, I came here to the senior center.
Have already called the A/C people, telling them about my problem. They said they'd be out as soon as possible (probably more like next week; they are the slowest thing this side of the Mississippi River!!). I told them I wouldn't be home today but would try to be there tomorrow. They said they'd check it out.
Over 20 days now of 100 degree heat, with no end in the forseeable future. Add to this the worsening drought situation, which only exacerbates things all the more. These are desperate times here in the Plains States, and now the heatwave has started spreading eastward. The only cooler spots in the country are the west coast or Alaska.
Makes me want to go up there to beat this godawful heat! I don't do hot weather. Makes me think back to the olden days where we didn't have fans or air conditioning units to keep cool, let alone any electricity. These modern conveniences sure have made people soft; these younguns sure don't know what modern comfort truly is until they don't have air conditioning, fans, OR electricity! Let them live back then when WE were kids!
Then they'll have a far better appreciation for "all things electric"! These young folks take everything for granted; it just makes me sick!!
Now that I am well into my eighties, the heat just bothers me all the more. At times I feel like I'm sitting at a card table in the pits of hell, and Satan is my card playing buddy. It's horrible!! Now I crave the coldness of winter because these hot summer days just absolutely undo me and turn me into a living zombie! The cold makes me hurt more, but lately, I'd take the pain of arthritis and the stinging north winds (or snow) over this natural sauna bath that God's provided!
I'm like, "Okay, God, enough with the heat already! What's wrong with a little relief, and what's wrong with sending us some rain when we need it so bad here??"
You tell it well, Karen. Did you get some nice rain where you are on Tuesday? Blessed rain... it even cooled down the sauna called Texas.
Blessings, Joy L. hale
