     The Nun's Castle

Recarnation: Chapter Fourteen

The next morning Mrs. Windsor opened the door and came in with a bag lunch for me saying:

“Well you two will have to be off. It will be a long ride. Did they tell you girl where you be living, did they tell you anything?

I shook my head slowly.

"Did they tell you about the Hans boy?”

Again I indicated that I did not know of Hans.

“Well you have a right to know, she said. You going to the castle, where the nuns live. Have you heard of it?"

I shook my head again.

“Don’t be mute girl you’ll have to learn to speak up for yourself. Those nuns are a terror on young girls and many gets their spirit broken. You don’t want that to happen to you do you?"

“No." I answered so she could hear me.

"Hans," she continued  "they sent him off to the army, expect he is somewhere near the coast, likely going to ship out to sea."

She looked at me. "Did you see him before you left.?"

I said "No, I did not see him. I wanted to but….”

“I understand," Mrs Windsor said quietly. "We all fall in love when we are young.”

Ok, now I have some fresh clothes for you, some my daughter had when she was a little girl. You about her size.

Now follow me and I get you ready down stairs and get some food into you."

I followed her down stairs to sat quietly as she served eggs. Mr.Houser apparently had eaten already and Mrs. Windsor indicated he was readying the cart.

She took my arm and gave me a reassuring pat on the back and walked me to the door where the bright sunshine revealed Mr. Houser hitching the horse onto the cart standing ready.

“Now," Mrs. Windsor said "if you need anything, you get word to me by Mr. Houser. He supplies the nuns each month with flour and other goods. I’ll be your friend if things get rough up there. And, I put a little something for you to read in your knapsack."

With that Mr.Houser took my bag and I began the journey with him to the castle where the nuns lived.
