Eddie Caldwinn was the craziest kid I ever saw. He would try anything on a dare. The only thing he didn’t like to do was swimming. But one day I dared him and the next thing you knew he was jumping off the diving board in his cutoff shorts shootin’ his skinny body halfway across the pool. He could barely swim but that didn’t stop him. Eddie loved to try new things, especially stuff no other kid would try. Back then I used to have a Schwinn Stingray bike. So did Eddie. Mine was bright red and his was black. We would go down to the park by the swimming pool and jump over stuff with a ramp we made in Eddie’s garage. Eddie’s dad was a preacher and didn’t seem to notice much. It was weird because he looked like Eddie’s grandfather. His mom looked like my grandmother. I always wondered if Eddie was adopted, but I never asked.
Ya all see Eddie was an only child. He was jealous I was from a big family. He was especially jealous I had older brothers. He told me all the time how lucky I was. I told him it wasn’t so fun being the second youngest in the family especially when it came to my older brothers. Sometimes they could be mean and pound the crap out of me. Adam was four years older and Carl two years older so they were way bigger and stronger than me. My dad warned ’em that I would be the toughest when I got older. I’m still waiting. Anyway, my brothers liked Eddie and looked after him, same as me.
