I can't believe this is happening ...

The very home we called our own (as well as Papa's business; he was a maker of furniture) has been ransacked.  We are forced to flee for our very lives.  The people who did this (German SA stormtroopers as well as non-Jewish civilians) have warned us that if we don't leave, we will be next.  We will be killed.

It is obvious that the Nazis don't like Jewish people.  They have vowed to destroy our homes, our synagogues, and hunt us down like the vermin they say we are.  They will stop at nothing to drive us out out of town.  Worse, they will even kill us or bring harm to our loved ones if we don't do as they have asked.

Where will we go?  Everywhere we look there's nothing but ruin and fire.  The very smell of burning buildings and possessions  causes us to cough and gag.  People are running everywhere, screaming and beggging for mercy.  We hear shouts of rage and gunfire in addition to the screams.  It is a very terrifying time.

All of this started yesterday.  A German-born Polish Jew killed a German diplomat in Paris, France; the diplomat was named Ernst Von Rath.  The German Nazi Party reacted angrily; they say punishment of the Jewish race will be sure, swift, and unending.  Late last night the attacks began and they continue as I write this in my secret journal.

Synagogues, homes, and businesses have been ransacked, set ablaze, even destroyed.  I am sure many Jewish people have been wounded, or worse, shot or even killed.  The Nazi Party has warned that this, Kristallnacht, is only the beginning of further attacks against the Jewish people and they will make sure that we will suffer.
