My son, Daniel Christian, is a miracle. Actually, all children are miracles, but mine is even more so.
Consider the facts: Daniel was born four months premature five years ago. He weighed as much as a can of soda. Doctors said he would not live.
Daniel just had his fifth birthday on Christmas Day, only a little over a week ago.
Daniel had all sorts of problems with his breathing (and other issues); when he came home from the hospital after a lengthy four month long stay in the NICU. He was on oxygen 24 hours a day.
He's now oxygen free but does have to be hospitalized from time to time as he has asthma and allergies.
Daniel was not expected to walk or talk. He does both. He talks a blue streak; the only time he is ever quiet is when he drops off to sleep at night when he goes to bed. He walks with a pair of bright blue crutches and wears braces on his legs, but even those don't slow him down any. He's as active (and as determined as ever) to prove people wrong!
Daniel does not have any problems with his mind. He's not even in kindergarten yet (he starts that in the fall). He is light years ahead of his classmates in terms of comprehension, word and number recognition, and can read and write.
His problems are more physical.
Daniel was tube-fed for the first few years of his life but now can eat just like any other child. His swallowing issues have resolved themselves; he had the tube removed from his tummy. His favorite foods: pizza, mac and cheese, and hamburgers. Daniel eats like a little horse: he cannot get enough food!! (
He is not fat, but he DOES have a humungous appetite! I'm always asking him, 'Where are you PUTTING all that food?' In your big TOE?!?' That cracks him up. LOL
Every day, Daniel proves the doctors (and us) wrong. He is absolutely incredible!! I just wish more people knew just what my little guy is capable of doing!
He plays baseball (on a Little League team for children with special needs; he LOVES it!), football, rides a bike, plays soccer, and can operate a computer far better than most grown ups. Daniel never tires of learning.
He just loves life, period!
I wish some of those doctors at the children's hospital could see Daniel now; they would be flabberghasted! I know I am: I thnk back to the sick little boy in the NICU, as opposed to the little boy who runs, plays, and laughs, and my heart sings with joy!
Daniel is truly a medical miracle and I am so proud to be his daddy! I love Daniel more than life itself!
