Somehow, some way, we continue to keep hidden from the Head-Splitters, who continue to lurk outside.  We cannot see them or hear them, but sure as rain, they're out there, lurking in the shadows.  We can smell them: a combination of body perspiration, smoke, oil, and only God knows what else.  They stink.  They stink to high heavens.

The Head-Splitters are a particularly dangerous band of Native American Indians, who have been unleashing their brand of terror upon unsuspecting, hapless homesteaders, mainly by raids and scalpings (hence, their name).  They will not stop at anything to gain entry into our homes, take our supplies, or worse, kill or kidnap our women and children.

So far we have managed to elude the Head-Splitters, but we cannot rest: not without them being so close to where we are!  My poor wife is scared to look out the window or open the door, less one of those beastly savages takes her or takes our kids away from us, turning them into one of their kind: the enemy.

I don't know how long our luck is going to hold out, but as long as it does, I will do anything possible to protect my family, even if it has to resort to something like cold-blooded murder.  I am not a violent man by nature, but when it comes to protecting my family from the innement danger that is clearly at hand, I will do so.  Just keep us in your prayers and pray that the Head-Splitters move on to somewhere else!  I don't know how much more of this we can all take ....
