November 11. Jus' what does that day mean ta' you? Well, it mean a lot to me, an' I tell you why in jus' a li'l bit.
Firs' of all, I am a VETERAN. Pure an' simple. I went in ta' serve my country durin' the 40's, but I got kick' out a' de service cause my feets, dey be flat, and when de armed force guys find out I had de flat foots, I hadda' go. They don' want nobody who had th' flat feets, so I hadda' go back home ta' Louisana. I was in de Armed Services for 2 year'. When I get kick' out a' de service, oh, ye' yaie, how I cried!!
Ever since den, I have been know' as a veteran, an' I love my country an' what it stan's for. I love my Flag, an' whenever I see our Flag, I still cry whenever I see it. We are free today because many guys fight and a lot a' dem die fightin' for our freedom. I guess dis is why I feel so honored to be a veteran; I may not have been in a war, but I still went into de miltary, an' I serve my country, even if it WAS for jus' two year'!
But de vets, dey don't get treated good. You see, many vets have healt' problem (me, included, I have de arthritis, an' I don' walk so good anymore; I use crutches, plus I jus' had open heart surgery earlier dis year; am still gettin' over that, plus I have angina), an' a lot a' dem were hurt in de war, an' have terrible problems from it. Or dey have nightmares, and dey t'ink dey still in battle or see demselves in de war again; an' it's all a terrible big mess. A lot a' dem are in nursin' or vet's homes, or are in de miltary hospitals, an' dey git treated shabby; dey don' get the needed care dey so badly need. An' a lot a' dem are livin' on li'l money, an' it is all dey can do to try ta' keep demselves or their famlys fed.
It's like de res' a' de worl' done forget us veterans; an' it seems like dey don' want ta' have anyt'in' ta' do wit' us. De only time dey remember us is on holidays like de Forth of July or Memoral Day, or days like today..Veteran's Day. Any odder time, we jus' don' seem to exist. It's like we dead or somet'in', an' it really hurts me. I may be jus' a "veteran", but I went in ta' fight for our freedom, an' people shoul' be kissin' de ground I walk on 'cause they be free 'cause a' guys like me an' all dem odder veterans!
We are veterans, an' we ALL deserve RESPECT!!!!
God bless our veterans!!

Author's Note: I purposely misspelled a lot of the words in this story; I wrote it in the way Armand would have written it. His English is poor, and he writes the way he speaks. He just learned English a few years back after speaking Cajun French for years.
*~*~*~*~*HAPPY VETERAN'S DAY*~*~*~*~* to ALL of our veterans, living AND deceased! LET US NOT FORGET OUR VETERANS; THEY ARE THE REASON WE ARE FREE TODAY!!
